578247 2007-08-08 14:50:00 i must say, this has to be the funniest thread i have read yet. im still smiling.
Enjoy your dreams of 4gb or ram, and as it is now 2:15am i too will join the rest of nz in slumber land.

oh yea, btw, ill post some of my findings on LCDs tomorrow for you.
Cheers

578248 2007-08-08 19:21:00 Hey Murray, the only thing I can add to the thread at this point is go for a 64bit CPU and OS if you're wanting to get 4GB of RAM. XP and Vista 32bit will only be able to address up to 3.2GB of RAM even though 4GB is installed.

Problem with 64bit is that you may find it hard/frustrating to locate appropriat/working 64bit drivers.

Other than that I don't see any problems with ther system you want.

PS: good idea to stay away from the quad core technology at this stage.

Cheers

578249 2007-08-08 20:25:00 64 bit XP, or stick with 32?

There's still not a whole heap of 64 bit apps out there, but it should utilise the memory better, although there are questions surrounding how effective windows does that even at 64 bit. No probs with Linux in that respect AFAIK.

I have an ASUS M2N-E SLI, most happy with it.
64bit will cause problems with the lack of drivers (not for the board) and support.

You can't use 4GB in 32bit though as has been said.

And I wouldn't bother getting Corsair RAM - its for overclocking. Get some cheaper decent stuff.

The ASUS 8800GTS is a good choice in my opinion, 3 yr warranty too, there isn't a huge difference between the 320mb and 640mb versions though.

I like the Coolermaster cases too, tasteful looking.

Pc, what do you recommend for cheaper RAM, A-Data, lower spec Corsair?

One aspect of higher speced RAM I like, and put me right if I'm wrong on this, is that because of the more robust selection process (QA), it's less likely to throw up faults, particularly under load. Yes.

Here's a list of the goodies so far, it's not set in stone yet.
I'll probably change the mobo to the M2N32 Deluxe 570 chipset. The keyboard and mouse were just chucked in to give those components a value, I prefer wired mice with a good grip and a bit of weight (fatties). The PSU and case I haven't checked out to any great extent yet, I may well go with the Coolermaster Centurian, though its not full aluminium construction. On cooling, any suggestions on quiet CPU and card coolers besides going to water (which is over the top).

The list thus far:

AMD Athlon64 X2 6000+ (3GHz) 2x1MB Cache *Dual Core* 2000Mhz Socket AM2 CPU + Fan Retail Boxed (or OEM)

Asus M2N32-WS Pro Socket NVidia nForce SLI 590 AM2 Motherboard (or Asus M2N32-Deluxe SLI nVidia nForce 570 Socket AM2 or whatever equivalent other brand is recommended)

Corsair XMS2 (TWIN2X2048-6400) Dual Channel kit 2x 1GB PC6400 DDR2 (800Mhz) Memory CL5-5-5-12 X2 = 4Gig

PCI-Express16x Video Card: Asus nVidia GeForce 8800GTS EN8800GTS/HTDP 640MB PCI-Express Video Card Dual Head, VGA, HDTV, TV-Out, DVI-I

Asus DRW-1814BLT (LightScribe) Dual Layer Dual Format 18x (Black) SATA DVD-Writer

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (ST3320620AS) 320GB 7200RPM Serial ATA300 Hard Disk Drive 16MB Cache X2 drives

578251 2007-08-08 21:40:00 Hi Murray, I was watching this thread last night and couldnt bring myself to comment as I was too jealous of your impending build.
However I would say this, you are looking to buy a mobo with no upgradablitlty, the AM2 cpu has no sucessor for this socket.
You do photoshop which is multi thread aware, and with 4Gb ram will be running a 64 bit o/s. I would be either getting a socket 775 mobo for a core 2 duo cpu or better yet a quad core.
I certainly dont understand why chiefnz would tell you not to?

I wouldnt get a desktop case either, nice pick with the silverstone case and psu, i would go for a tower like the TJ09 or the upcoming TJ10, i wouldnt get the Strider psu though, go for the decathlon series and 650 is more than enough, the big they are the noisier!

Man, I am still in negotiations with the wife over my wish list, I envy you.

Now dont go getting dead end equipment!

578252 2007-08-08 22:15:00 Heyya kiddo, hows the fag addicition?

Yep, I've been delaying and delaying and putting it off and scratching around waiting with me fumm shoved up me nose for the blimmin idjuts at AMD to get the Phenom out the door . Even an AM2+ board or two to choose from would have been nice (no not the Biostar one, which is not available yet AFAIK) . The Barcelona chips are due out soonish, but hell, I don't want to spend thousands on a CPU which I won't be using to it's capabilities .

The Phenoms desktop CPUs, Kuma, Agena, et al, will plug in to an AM2 board . The only thing you'll not get out of them in that scenario is some smarter power saving, Hyper 3 and DDR 3 . The latter two are pants anyway at this stage of the game and probably for a year or three yet . So, I'll miss out on some power features when I upgrade the CPU next year, I think I can live with that .

What I am more concerned about, requiring some carefully thought out advice from the good people here, is how in the blue blazes am I going to persuade the financial controller that I need a new Phenom CPU so soon after spending up on this rig? I'm thinking that the only way to achieve that upgrade path is to get the dosh from her estate, which may carry its own risks unrelated to computing

Then again, Opterons are coming down in price, I could chuck a couple of those on a socket 940 and clock the buggers . Erm, no, probably a bad idea that . The cost of dual socket boards is prohibitive .

I'll check out the other cases and power supplies, ta very much for the info . I'm pretty sure I read a review on the TJ cases, just not sure where .

Kindest regards

AMD Fanboy

578253 2007-08-08 23:53:00 Aaa Murray, i have tried remaining exicted about AMD mate, and as you can see, I have the original newcastle chip, bus us married lot have to strike hard while the iron is hot. There is abolutely no way I will get away with an upgrade with just a dual core and upgrade to quad within a year of each other, so while my simple DVD/MP3 backups will not stress a quad at present, I have to look out for 3 years down the track which is why I am gunning for the Q6600 (hopefully a G0 stepping) to go with a P35 chipset board.

Are you sure Phenoms are AM2, I thought they were F socket, however even if that is so, 3Ghz cpu will not be around until Q2-3. Buy that time 45nm Penryn will be out.

Anyway, good luck bud, looks like a nice build!
SolMiester (139)
578254 2007-08-09 01:03:00 Yep, Phenom Kuma (x2C) and Agena (x4C) desktop chips AM2+, the AgenaFX (x4C) will be AM2+ and socket F .

They've been saying Q3 to Q4 07 for Phenom, but I doubt they'll hit the shelves for us plebs until Q1 or Q2 08 .

Then there will be the problem of getting parts in little old NZ . How many socket F boards are out there, even now after it was released a year ago . Precious little on these shores .

I've given up waiting .

Nice.

I use Kingston Value RAM which is useless for overclocking but perfectly fine otherwise.
And its got an 8 yr warranty.

578256 2007-08-09 02:15:00 Ta PC.

As before, the case was just thrown in for a value, it's a HTPC case ***. I'm now looking at Silverstone ali cases (TJ06, TJ109-10), Lian-Li (lowish end) Gigabyte and Thermaltake Tsunami.

Gotta go for a wee while.
