Check your line condition.

Noise Margin (AKA Signal to Noise Margin or Signal to Noise Ratio)
Relative strength of the DSL signal to Noise ratio. The higher the number the better for this measurement. In some instances interleaving can help raise the noise margin to an acceptable level.

6dB or below is bad and will experience no synch or intermittent synch problems
7dB-10dB is fair but does not leave much room for variances in conditions
11dB-20dB is good with little or no synch problems* (but see note below)
20dB-28dB is excellent
29dB or above is outstanding

* Note that there may be short term bursts of noise that may drop the margin, but due to the sampling time of the management utility in your modem, will not show up in the figures.

Line Attenuation
Measure of how much the signal has degraded between the DSLAM and the modem. This is largely a function of the distance from the exchange. The lower the dB the better for this measurement.

20dB and below is outstanding
20dB-30dB is excellent
30dB-40dB is very good
40dB-50dB is good
50dB-60dB is poor and may experience connectivity issues
60dB or above is bad and will experience connectivity issues

577742 2007-08-09 09:30:00 My connection speed dropped from 4000mbps to 400mbps. Numerous calls to the help desk didn't get me anywhere. I finally got the problem fixed by emailing help@ihug.co.nz. This was answered smartly and after an exchange of emails the problem was resolved. Worth a try! David DavidW (532)

It may pay to check the date of the thread start next time - not the date the member joined.

Bad hair week. Very bad flu with inner ear infection to boot. Still have not got rid of it. Thats my story and I am sticking to it.

577745 2007-08-09 20:58:00 Try getting a new modem for free from Telecom (if they originally sent you out a free one if you signed up with them, like I'm sure we all did :P)
.

Not me, I figured if the ISP gives a modem away it is probably a crap one to begin with.

Exactly. Well Xtra anyway. KOL, Orcon and Slingshot, maybe some others give out very good Dynalink modems. Xtra distributes Dlink's crap, with their disfunctional firmware splattered all over it.:groan:

577747 2007-08-09 21:56:00 DemonHunter You are right 4000kbps sorry On Broadband 3 David DavidW (532)
577748 2007-08-10 04:43:00 I don't know why everyone assumes they are crap. The D-Link G604t (the one they gave me, after I said the original (wayyy back) single one didn't work) is a very good modem imo.

lol, i wish we had those speeds  !

7mbps here :P

577749 2007-08-10 04:58:00 7mbps here :P
is that the speed your line can handle, or the speed you actually download at?
cos my line says: 7552 but i never get speeds even remotely near that.
The fastest i have ever constantly downloaded at (i.e. for over 1 minute) is 550kb/s and that was like WOW! usually more around 250kb/s :annoyed:

577750 2007-08-10 05:00:00 Speed test says (on a good day) 7378 down and 398.

On average it's about 6860 down and 350 - 400 up. I remember downloading Photoshop CS3 Extended the other night (around 500mb) took less than 20 mins.
