578630 2007-08-09 10:50:00 yes is definatly does blow on the ram ae, i cut the hole in my case for it.
True, the out of shop fans on the side are next to useless, they are poorly positioned and don't do a heck of a lot.

Well i check in several different ways:
Main way is because the side of my case is perspex and the fan is positioned directly in the center of the 3 chips of RAM.
I have also taken the other side of the case off, while the fan is going, and held my hand just above the RAM and there is a nice steady breeze blowing on them.
There is also a slight breeze coming from the front fan, this warm air gets sucked out by the two fans at the back.

578633 2007-08-09 21:19:00  Cooling...well the thermaltake LCS setup is far too effective...even with the four 120mm fans and the two 90mm fans turned right down, the temperature of the cpu is sitting at a chilly 26 deg.

I blow my case out with a vacuum cleaner about twice a month, and use a *dry* paintbrush or similar to get all the little bits of cat hair out from around the fans. We have a few cats in out house and those fans suck in an amazing amout of dust and other crap :D

Can't stress too much the importance of good cable management, especially in a smaller case. Keeps things tidy, and hugely increases airflow.

Great thread :p Cheers.

578635 2007-08-09 23:02:00 Yay, I quite like case modding and cooling...The current TJ06 is fine however my upgrade will require a few mods.

I wont to remove the 2nd chamber 80mm fan, remove the floppy cage and re-mount in the top chamber under the cd drives. Install a 120mm intake for the 2nd or middle chamber. I current ly have a 92mm exhaust behind the HDD cage and the psu has a front draw (as opposed the bottom draw) with rear fan for the top which is only the cd drives anyway.

Looking to put a zalman 9700 on top of a q6600...

So it is a photo chop of the desired result here (i13.photobucket.com)

I was going put another 120mm fan on the door over the gp area as shown, however not too sure if I'll need it, depending on what card I get really.

comments?

578636 2007-08-10 00:03:00 One dilemma I've just had is whether to put two hard drives together, one directly over the other, or whether to mount them with a hard drive-sized gap between them for better airflow and to ensure they don't cook each other .

If they are close together I can use one PSU modular cable for the pair of them but if they have the gap between them I need to use another modular cable as the plugs on one cable don't quite reach both drives .

I chose to keep them separate and use two PSU cables as I think the drives would be cooler this way even though there is an extra cable to clutter up the case the little more . I've tried to make it so that the airflow isn't too restricted by having the extra cable .

Have I done the right thing or doesn't it really matter if the drives are directly on top of one another?

578637 2007-08-10 00:43:00 Foxy, you can get small molex extension cables that will allow you to have the HDDs apart and only use one PSU cable, it is effectivley a win win situation

Though I wouldn't mind seeing the difference in temps between HDDs with a gap and HDDs with no gap... I might test that over the week end if I can be bothered and am not busy gaming :p

578638 2007-08-10 01:02:00 It has always amased me that the the "standard" way of cooling a pc was blowing air through the PSU and into the case
A far better way. imho, would be to push cool filtered air into the case so that you would never get a build up of dust, which IS the cause of most overheating problems.

or you can just extend the wires yourself. not hard with a little bit of wire, soldering gun, and insulation tape.

As for the hard drive being to close and getting hotter, this is true. I didn't used to have enough room in my computer (upgraded now) and had to have one of my hdds in a floppy bay, and one side of the hdd was really close to the framework of the case. This harddrive was always quite a bit warmer than the other two because of the airflow issue. Since has been moved to a better place and keeps a lot cooler.
