2007-08-09 10:05:00 | Hi Guys Long time since I've posted here, but have a question and thought this would be a good place to start and the IP dept I need is shut for the night. My daughter has a wireless internet connection with xtra she uses when she is away from home. Until this month all has been sweet. All that we have had to pay is the monthly fee ($50ish), until this month that is. Before now, the most she has used is 12 data packets at no cost. We have just got a bill this month and she has managed 27 data packets and have been billed just over $700 (with a saving of $575). How can this be? Admittedly, she has downloaded a couple of movies on limewire and this is the only thing I can put it down to. I would have thought that, as the most she has managed to date was 12 data packets (savings of $150) that just over twice that would not have pushed the cost up by about 400%. Am I missing something or have Xtra made a horrible mistake. :help:

2007-08-09 11:50:00 | Thanks for that. How does someone manage to freeload. What would you suggest to tighten up security. I would use 256 bit WPA encryption. This is incredibly hard to crack and will put off everyone from having a go at it. Do NOT use WEP as this is easy to crack, i have done it, and takes me only about 5 - 10 minutes when using the correct tools. Mind you, having said this, the average 'im am teh 1337 haXXoR' who is actually a n00b will get put off with this and go and find easier unsecured networks to 'hack'. Though how anyone can call connecting to an unsecured wireless network hacking i don't know...... lol A definatly do not use Mac address filtering as this is the easiest method of security to crack. For help doing this refer to these websites: Here (www.cnet.com.au) Here (www.microsoft.com) Here (www.microsoft.com) make sure that the password is long, not short like: Don'tHack that would be way to easy to crack refer to the following website (www.grc.com)to get a password generator that generate long complex passwords. Just remember to write it down and keep it safe!!! post if you have any trouble setting this up.

2007-08-09 20:19:00 | Go into Start / Run / Type in CMD In the CMD Window type in netstat -a If you do this at various times of day it will show who is connected to the computer each time, might show you if anyone else is attached to your wireless. Also make sure you don't have any passwords / bank details on your computer in case they have also been peeking about the computer. Preferable change passwords / isp etc to be on the safe side. This is from personal experience when i lost a few $thousand from my bank recently. (Now recovered but a pain in the ass all the same)

2007-08-09 20:47:00 | I don't know Craig, all I am saying is take precautions in case. It did not feel nice having my pc hacked and my bank account compromised. I am still not sure how it was done, but I formatted and reinstalled and changed all passwords after that and I have taken on advice from this board and increased security on my network and wireless network.

2007-08-09 22:06:00 | I just realised that craigb is talking about a wireless internet connection rather than wireless network. I'm not sure whether there is a difference when it comes to securing the connection but either way Google (www.google.com) has lots of info. Other than the possibility of freeloaders the computer could be infected with trojans and other malware that could cause high traffic so it would be prudent to do the usual malware scans as well. If you need help with that have a look at this page (faqf1.net.nz).

2007-08-09 23:30:00 | is anyone reading what i posted or looking at any of the websites i listed? if you use correct WPA 256-bit encryption, there is NO way that your wireless can be hacked and your pc compromised. Please go and read the websites i listed above on how to do this.
