577626 2007-08-07 06:00:00 Hey everyone.
Just thought that i would open up a new thread with the purpose of getting everyone to post their view on current anti-virus/spyware/malware etc programs out there today. And discuss any issues and pros/cons of the products they use.
Personally I would recommend NOD32 for Anti-virus and a stand alone Firewall
IPcop which is a Linux based freeware firewall.
Looking forward to hearing everyone's views:cool:

577627 2007-08-07 06:19:00 I just use Avast pro and Comodo Firewall.

Comodo coz its free.

Only prob with Comodo, is adding rules to it. Sometimes, its a bit tricky trying to figure out what to put in it!

And it can also cause errors (misconfigured firewall error), on the Windowsupdate site, if you dont add 2 rules for Windowsupdate to it.

And DCC in IRC doesnt work. If Comodo is installed on 2+ computers. Unless both / all have rules for it.

Hopefully V3 which is out soon will be easier to configure or easier, or it does it itself..

Used to use Zonealarm but it kept on shutting its proxy service off, and stopped net access. So, it ended up in the bin.

Tried Trendmicro Internet security as well. It kept cutting me off after 30 mins or so. So that ended up in the bin as well.

Used to use Spybot, it kept stuffing up everytime I updated it.

That went in the bin. Used to use Adaware 2006 as well. That went in the bin too.

Wont bother with Adaware 2007, I've read its too buggy, slow and useless.

So, all I'm using atm is Trojan remover, Rogueremover Avast and Comodo.

577628 2007-08-07 06:32:00 I use Nod32 for AV, Zonealarm ( Free) I work with customers PC's every day and see lots of them with out of date AV's.

One PC over the weekend had Norton's said the PC had a "few" viruses, but couldn't remove them, Nod32 took care of 131 on the blighters.

No two guess's as to where my vote goes:thumbs:

I've been quite happy and virus free with the "unreliable resource hog" AVG. As a non commercial user why pay for something else? Similarly I don't see the need for another PC just to run a standalone firewall.

Bad.
Spybot occasionally has a problem getting updates from certain of the servers, the SaferNetworking ones have never given a problem, and as I test anti-malware products often I have found it is one of the best free tools.

But of course you should always use more than one anyway.
One anti-virus.
One 3rd party Firewall.
2 or 3 anti-spywares.

AVG is ok as far as FREE anti-virus software is concerned, but has been proven to not be as effective as other products.
The purpose of my standalone firewall is not to protect from viruses, but attacks and other intrusions. Comodo firewall I used for a while, but enjoyed the challenge of using/configuring a standalone firewall.

577632 2007-08-07 07:20:00 Just to throw a time bomb out there......... is anyone here un-educated enough to use any of the Norton Virus products? and if there are would you like some statistics on system destruction caused by the Norton Virus? Bozo (8540)
577633 2007-08-07 07:21:00 Kaspersky 7.0 + ZoneAlarm Pro (latest version)

$30NZD for 3 years for both. (Both legit)

Best security I've ever had, and without the extra slowdown from security suites.

If you go for this, make sure you install Kaspersky first, or it wont work with ZA.

Occasionally? It happened nearly EVERY time I checked for updates.

It didnt really matter what server I used.

Even if it did update, it usually stopped 1/2 way or 3/4 of the way.

I had to kill it, to end it. Then go back in see if it had updated, it did get updated, BUT, it didnt tell you, before you killed it.

It just got annoying, and in the end I biffed it.

I would say P2P programs would be the main culprit, which I dont use,

I dont use IM programs, (besides MIRC), I use Poptray for checking emails, saves me opening OE or Outlook (altho I only use Outlook for syncing to the Ipods).

So I can delete / blacklist whatever email, as soon as I see it (If I dont where its from or who its from).

So, I would say, it DEPENDS on what programs you use, where you go, what you open.

On whether or not, you get infected, or not. Which hasnt happened yet.

Most people in here USED to use Symantec/Norton AV/Internet Security.

The only thing it was good for, was hogging memory . slowing a system down, and crashing systems. And did nothing whatsoever to protect people from anything.

And most of the people who posted HJT logs in here (who were infected by something), had one thing in common.

Symantec firewall or AV program. was installed.
