579383 2007-08-11 01:42:00 I have two home PC's - one called MUMS & one called DADS.
MUMS is running 98SE and has a printer attached.
DADS is running XP Pro.
I have a direct crossover cable connection without a hub. Both PC's have their own independent dialup connection - can't get broadband here.
Both have Zone Alarm installed.
How do I go about setting up the network for these two?
Step by step because I'm a novice.....

579384 2007-08-11 01:54:00 Both have to have the same WORKGROUP name.

If you want to share a folder on both.

There's a FAQ for networking here somewhere.

And unless ZA has been registered, I dont think you can use internet connection sharing. If you want to have both on the net.

As it wont have the option.

579385 2007-08-11 06:48:00 I'm assuming you have all the right hardware - 2x PCI network Cards? if not, get some cheap ones from Dick smiths. Connect the crossover cable to both machines.

Run the Network Setup Wizard on DADS - Start>Programs>Accessories>Communications>Network Setup Wizard. Name the network MSHOME (this is 98SE's default)

Step through the wizard, making a network setup disk when requested. Again, name the network MSHOME.

Insert the net setup disk into MUMS and run NETSETUP.exe, restarting as necessary (several times!). Open Start>Control Panel>Network and change where it says "Windows Logon" to "Client for MS Networks". Restart PC.

If it's anything like my configuration, (98SE and XP Home) it will now work.

To access the other PC, click Start>Run and type \\MUMS or \\DADS.

579386 2007-08-12 04:52:00 I'm just starting to configure this now but have to wait as 'MUM' is using her PC. Anyway, how do I configure the Zone Alarm Firewals so they don't block access? Cheers straka01 (310)
579387 2007-08-12 05:51:00 And unless ZA has been registered, I dont think you can use internet connection sharing. If you want to have both on the net.

wrong I've done it heaps of times.......with zonealarm free version......ah....

just trying to remember how to do it.......hmmm...might just open up a virtual pc and install zone to check ..........

k open up zonealarm then clik firewall/zones/add/ (ip range etc)

this'll enable you to run one pc as a proxy server so you can run connection sharing ......if you have trouble with microsofts internet connection sharing system do goto www.analogx.com and download 'proxy' it's very small and very simple to install/run/configure........

579388 2007-08-12 07:50:00 So why would you need analogx?

ICS will work in XP and 98 SE.

The last version of ZA, I had it didnt have the ICS option in it until u regged it.

It may have changed tho, I dont know. I dont use it now.

579389 2007-08-12 08:02:00 you dont need any kind of 'ics' option in zone as far as I know it never had it......you jsut set the program to 'trust' certain ip addys etc.......very easy really as for why you might use analogx's 'proxy' program rather than microsofts ics well I belive ics can be a bit cranky sometiems and I've used 'proxy' and reccomended it to others it's very simple to use .....I mean REALLY easy..... drcspy (146)
579390 2007-08-12 08:05:00 Fair enough. I've never had a prob with ICS.

Altho when this guy decides to turn up again. It'll be better if 98 SE is made the main PC. As XP is easier to configure on a network.

579391 2007-08-12 08:20:00 You need to define "Trusted Zone" in ZoneAlarm.

Cheers :)

579392 2007-08-15 06:01:00 OK, I've got everything ready but need to configure Zone Alarm. When I try to add a trusted IP Address - how do I know what the actual IP address is for each PC? straka01 (310)
