2007-08-10 19:49:00 | Anyone else noticing a sudden big increase in spam . . . . ? They can spam all they like, nothing gets through as I screen everything with Mailwasher so it just gets deleted at the ISP . About Wednesday the spam dropped off a bit for about 24 or so hours and then started to pick up and last couple of days now, it has been pouring in . Huge increase excuse the pun in personal growth and other bedroom improvements, steady increase in those stupid you have a ecard messages, big increase in stock messages, this morning was about 40 messages that I had hit it big time in the MS Lottery as well . On average, would probably see 2 to 5 spam a hour during the day increasing during the evening and 10+ per hour during the wee hours . Now it has gone to 20 or so a hour during the day and over night maybe 30 or 40 a hour . Thats a big increase from someone and there bots . Just wondering if anyone else had seen a sudden increase . Have seen it couple of times in the past, seems to go back to normal after a few days .

2007-08-10 20:31:00 | It just means your careless about giving out your email address. Get a new login from your ISP (Email 1) Give that email address to nobody.(Normally a fee to change the main login/email) Most ISP's let you have 5 email addresses. With Ihug you can add/remove email addresses via the web. Create new one(s) as required and be careful who you give them to. Keep these ones for friends etc, not too hard to change if you get spam. Free to change For logging into forums or any other sites you need to give an email create a throwaway one like hotmail, gmail etc and use that. If the throwaway ones start getting spam then just create a new one.

Don't agree with that comment Xtra give alias addresses Most ISPs you will find give you a real email address with its own password. |

2007-08-10 20:58:00 | I have noticed an increase in spam, noticeably from HotelClub, offering me discounted rates on hotels or something. It never appears in Thunderbird though, only Gmail's spam folder. :) | pcuser42 (130) | |
2007-08-10 23:46:00 | The question was . . . . . . . . had anyone else noticed a sudden upsurge in spam mail . I have had the same email address since windows 95 so it will be well and truely in the wild . I am not downloading the spam, it is screened with mailwasher while still on the isp mail server and deleted from there . They can spam all they like, with a 60mb mail box they will have to do better than this . On a normal night, 10pm to 6am, maybe see 140+ messages, probably expect 70 to 85 thereabouts to be valid, 90% of them are work related . Night before last though, 6am saw 451 messages of which 87 were valid . This morning 6am, there were 477, 93 were valid . Not helped when you get according to the server mail log, 44 messages in a row, all exactly the same except the senders details all claiming I had hit it big time with the Microsoft Lottery . Many of the messages seem to be duplicates and in batches from a few to many like the MS Lottery one . Maybe a spammer has screwed up somewhere, spambots gone silly or the spammer is trying to exceed his monthly quota to get a bonus . . . . . Bottom line is, was just curious if anyone else had also noticed any upsurge . Wouldn't be surprised if in a few days it returns back to normal .

2007-08-10 23:56:00 | Nope, poptray deals with most of my spam, (I've blocked over 50-60+ known spam domains, that's stopped MOST of the spam). It deletes it before I see it. You should get something similar, you'll notice a BIG drop in spam. And youre right Safari. Like Ihug I think gives u 5 emails. My flatmate has her own userrname/pw for her email. Which isnt the same as mine.

2007-08-11 00:11:00 | I had a quick look at poptray after one of your earlier messages but at the time already had mailwasher installed and running. Does to a point same thing. I can block domains, filter by keywords or sentances, etc and if I wanted to, simply allow Mailwasher to auto delete anything and everything that matched the various rules and filters and manually delete the rest before downloading the valid mail, did that for a while till I found from the mail log that it had deleted a couple of valid messages so went back to running Mailwasher manually. All the spam gets dumped at the bottom of the screen anyway so it only takes a few seconds to run a quick eye over it and manually tick anything not already ticked for deletion and press process. | PinoyKiw (9675) | |
2007-08-11 00:13:00 | The question was........had anyone else noticed a sudden upsurge in spam mail. No, I have no increase because I don't get any to begin with. I have had the same email address since windows 95 so it will be well and truely in the wild.. Time to get a new Email from your ISP they they can't spam you until they manage to get that new email address.
