| 578920 | 2007-08-10 01:34:00 | I've had to load up a new PC as my old one started getting bad sectors. this one has a single 150gb hdd which I stupidly partitiioned with 5gb for the active / os drive and the balance in D which I use for data. However, the active partition is far too small and I'm running out of space. Can anuone tell me how to go about increasing the c: drive partitiion without destroying all the data I've loaded? I presume that it's not possible to go back and use fdisk without data loss - hence my problem. Also, I had our two home PC's running 98SE networked before I had to get this new PC which runs XP. How do I re-establish the network between these two PC's. I have a direct cable connection without a hub. Both PC's have their own independent dialup connection - can't get broadband here. Any guidance appreciated. Cheers |

| 578921 | 2007-08-10 01:44:00 | Partition Magic can probably do it. From memory it has a slider on it that you just add more to one partition and less to the other. Partitioning sux. HDD's are cheap just add a second one. If your going to loose a drive then you loose all partitions anyway |

| 578922 | 2007-08-10 01:45:00 | You'll need Partitionmagic or similar to increase the partition. Do you want to network 3 of them (2 98 and XP), or just the 2 98 SE PC's?? If 3, you need a hub, if you want to network just the 2 98 SE PC's, you'll need an ethernet cable and a hub / or xover cable. Depending on what kind of ethernet cable you get . |

If you want to try a free program there are Linux-based partition programs that have been recommended here, such as QParted ( . sourceforge . net/faq . en . html" target="_blank">qtparted . sourceforge . net) . Make sure you back up any important data before using any of the programs . Alternatively you can always install your programs on the larger partition . QTParted is just a GUI... you can compile it using QT under Windows, but the problem is that libparted is platform dependent. However you can use some kind of live distribution ;) Acronis Disk Director works well also. But its not free. Around $70.00 www.acronis.com.au |

| 578928 | 2007-08-10 12:05:00 | Following the advice I received first-off - I downloaded te 22mb demo of Partition Magic 8. It seemed to be able to do the job so I went back to Norton's website to pay and get the key. Well - it doesn't work like that! When I paid for the program - although I received a key there's nowhere on the demo to insert it and complete the purchase. No - you have to download 44.3 mb of the program and delete the demo b4 installation of the paid program..... Boy, wish they'd explained that from the start.... Anyway - after installing this program and running it - I was able to increase the size of my active / primary drive - with no problems. So although a long and expensive process - it did work. I have sucessfully changed my c: drive to 50gb - robbing the d; drive of some space. If anyone has a use for this program - you are welcome to use my one - I'll probably never use it again.... Anyone got any weasy walk-throughs for my second question about networking 2 PC's. This one running XP & the other running win98se. Direct cable connection with each having it's own dialup internet connection... Thanks to all |

| 578929 | 2007-08-10 20:43:00 | For more than two PC's you need a hub. XP will network fine with Win98SE. Win98SE uses Netbios which you can enable on the XP machine makes life a little easier. Same network addressing and subnet on all. Network naming the same on all. Check Foxy's Network Faq faqf1.net.nz |
