2007-08-19 02:28:00 | I've made the EXCEL & PUB folders on each PC shared - do I need to make every sub-folder and file shared - that would take ages? I think it's password problems - since I read the info on that site you sent me to to set up the network. It was good and got me connected but it's advice on setting the passwords was a little hazy.

2007-08-19 02:48:00 | Why do you want to share every single folder for Excel and Publisher?? When they'll have exactly the same files and folders?? If office is installed on both, why bother? Just share a folder on both. If you want to copy files then create a shortcut on both, by going to start/run and typing sendto. Then right mouse / new / shortcut. Point it to the shared folder. On the shared PC. Then when u want to copy a file from one to the other. Select the file / right mouse / sendto / the name you gave the shortcut. Its on the other PC /and vice versa.

2007-09-02 00:31:00 | In spite of all these suggestions, my network still does not work. Is there some resource or website that gives clear step by step instructions for setting up a 98 - xp(pro) network with crossover cables? It would be very usefull to know which switches need to be enabled too. I've gone through loading the networking files heaps of times and it says it's connected from the xp end.... but I can't see the other pc from either pc, nor the printer! Thanks to all those who've replied so far....

2007-09-02 01:25:00 | I am not sure what "switches are you talking about", but anyway this is my official manual configuration. Two computers, say "D" and "M". ON "D" 1) Right-click "My Computer", click "Properties" 2) Click "Computer Name" Tab 3) Click "Change" 4) A window should pop-up. Specify a name for the computer. 5) Click "Workgroup" and specify a name. (For convenience sake, we will call the computer D and the workgroup HOME) 6) Click OK 7) Click OK in the computer properties windows. (You may have to restart the computer. If you are prompted to, do so) Configuring IP 1) Go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections 2) Right-click on your LAN connection and click "Properties" 3) Under the heading "This connection uses the following items", click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) 4) Click "Properties" 5) A new window should pop up, click "Alternate Configuration" 6) Click "User configured" radio button 7) Here, you can specify the address. For computer D, specify the IP as 192.168.0.2, subnet mask as 255.255.255.0, Default gateway as 192.168.0.1 8) Under Preferred / Alternate DNS server, for Xtra dial-up the values are 202.27.158.40 and 202.27.156.72 respectively. The address may vary between ISPs. 9) Click "OK" 10) Click "OK" under the LAN connection properties You are done for computer D computer M 1) Right-click "My Computer", click "Properties" 2) Click "Computer Name" Tab 3) Click "Change" 4) A window should pop-up. Specify a name for the computer. 5) Click "Workgroup" and specify a name. (For convenience sake, we will call the computer M and the workgroup HOME) 6) Click OK 7) Click OK in the computer properties windows. For computer D, specify the IP as 192.168.0.1, subnet mask as 255.255.255.0, Default gateway as 192.168.0.2 8) Under Preferred / Alternate DNS server, for Xtra dial-up the values are 202.27.158.40 and 202.27.156.72 respectively. The address may vary between ISPs. 9) Click "OK" 10) Click "OK" under the LAN connection properties To share your printer 1) Go to start > Printers and Faxes 2) RIght-click on the desired printer, click "sharing" (I don't have a printer connected to my laptop now, so I am not sure how everything should go. But anyway, you would have to configure the method of sharing etc. Click "OK" when you are done) (Got to go for lunch, will try to continue if got time) Cheers and good luck :)

2007-09-02 05:14:00 | Eureka - we've got it working - well my wife (alias MUM) happened on a website that gave us the final piece of info... www.easydesksoftware.com It said that 95 & 98 use NETBIOS but XP has been made to use TCP/IP only... Anyway, there's a workaround at the bottom of the website above. Thanks to all who gave me tips and suggestions. Much appreciated
