2007-08-18 00:48:00 | Go to the windows firewall in control panel, and make sure file and printing sharing is enabled under exceptions. Windows firewalll is OK but if u get a trojan or something this firewall wont stop outgoing traffic.

2007-08-18 01:05:00 | OK - I've removed Zone Alarm and enabled windows firewall in XP. I've made sure all the exceptions are ticked - it's a strange way to do things - but everything is ticked so it doesn't block anything listed. I tried to find computers by using the Network Connections/Search for Computers - still no joy... Maybe I'll reboot again......

2007-08-18 01:07:00 | 1. MAKE sure the workgroup names are the same FIRST. Or you wont see anything. And create and share a folder on both. You DID uninstall ZA didnt you and reboot?

2007-08-18 01:58:00 | Yep, ZA has been completely removed. They both use the Workgroup MSHOME and the both have shared drives - I always partition my HDD and create C:PRIMARY and D:DATA. Still I get the little icon in the taskbar saying 'Limited or No Connectivity'. What else could it be - it's surely a stubborn problem? | straka01 (310) | |
2007-08-18 02:09:00 | Errr partitions isnt a shared folder. You HAVE to create a folder on C or D, then share it. Then do the same on the other PC. What PC is the main PC ?? And what info have you put in under 98 under network neighbourhood I think it is

2007-08-18 06:27:00 | OK. I created an EXCEL folder on each PC and have set them as shared - full access. The main PC is this XP one. What info should I put in Network Neighbourhood? I've run the 'netsetup.exe' program which I created on the XP PC. I've re-booted again and again but still no connection....

2007-08-18 06:52:00 | for what it is worth I have a win98 and two winxp computers networked. I use Comodo and AVG on the winxp machine but only AVG on the WIN98 machine as Comodo doesn't have a win98 version. I have found it easier to use the same logon name on all computers. I let all computers find the IP address automatically in the "local area properties"/"Internret protocol" parts of "local Area Connection". I also have the my broadband provider's DNS numbers in the "use the following DNS server address" here My network sometimes does what yours does and at one stage I used fixed IP's with success. My best guess is that you are running foul of Winxp security protocols somehow as for one WINxp machine it always ask for a userid/password while the other winxp lets me browse across the network with no problems. good luck Oh yes, I think that a switch is not a bad idea for a network. It seems to buffer things and ease problems. They are only $25 or so from Madkiwi I think and with a switch you can keep adding those old computers to your network plus a broadband modem.

2007-08-18 20:32:00 | Well good news this morning - I have the network open but must have password problems as I still can't access files or folders on each other's PC. When I try to add a user account to the xp pc called MUM - it says it already exists !!! But there's no user showing only Administrator, Dad & Guest! It is XPpro & I believe it's got to be configured with pwds to see the network. How do I go about setting up user accounts on each PC that use the same pwd - especially when it says there's a user called MUM but I can find where?

2007-08-18 20:54:00 | Make sure simple file sharing is ticked in XP Pro (open my computer / tools / folder options / view - down the bottom) . What files and folders exactly?? You cant share the WHOLE hdd on either . Just the folder/s you created and shared . I dont think u cant add users in 98 . Since it doesnt have anything in it like XP does .
