| 579308 | 2007-08-13 03:01:00 | heres a thread (episteme.arstechnica.com) which may be of interest to the original poster, basically from what i have read autocad 2006 doesn't work with Vista and there will be no patch to help it work from the makers, however apparently some much older versions of autocad do work, edit have you tried installing and running it with elevated priveleges as some people claim it works for them double edit Try looking here (discussion.autodesk.com) Triple Edit This looks promising (discussion.autodesk.com) |

I know there are a number of other AutoCAD style programs available. |

I was just saying that incase the person in question ended up buying 4 gigs, and found he could only see 3.25. Wouldn't be good if he got the wrong info and had a usless 750MB of ram now would it  |

| 579312 | 2007-08-13 04:26:00 | No problem wratterus, just a minor technical slip up on my behalf. If it was me Id be using a MacPro for that type of job since they actually work out being better value than a PC. |

| 579313 | 2007-08-13 05:24:00 | Thanks guys for all your suggestions . From what Ive read it seems that most people have run into trouble by upgrading their system from XP to Vista . And I note on one of those links Nigel supplied someone has found a way to get the thing going . However, in this case we have a new machine with Vista already installed, (purchased at no small cost I might say) only to find you cant install the very programme that was the cornerstone of your purchase . Changing to another Drafting Programme is not an option because this guy is a gun with Autocad . Plus, all his historical drawings are in AutoCad which complicates things further . All power to the pirates I say . :D Speaking of which, he tells me that some firms he does work for require the details of your AutoCad programme (Serial Number etc . ) which they relay to Autocad for confirmation that you are using a legitimate programme . Havent heard of that one before . :) |

That would make the situation difficult.:o From experience changing between design programs is a fiddle but not as bad as learning from scratch as similar concepts still apply. I originally learned Illustrator then went and learned Freehand which took less than half the time. |

Some people do appear to be able to install it rather than upgrade it but I didin' find anyone saying how they managed it |
