The actuall Xserve hardware is $5,898 if your wanting to run one, Two 64-bit 2.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon processors store.apple.com but the Xserve software can run of any standard Mac Windows info here www.apple.com Ideally they are suited as a print management/prepress or video edit/file server setup but they run Windows stuff very well. |

I think most people in a small business setup would just buy the Xserve @ $499 and put it on a Mac mini or iMac with the help of Parallels or Bootcamp if need be. I was just offering the suggestion as a comparison. |

To get around the user having to enter a password in run type control userpasswords2 and choose which user to auto login, enter password and click OK and the PC will log into the user account without the need to enter a password . You don't need a server to do what you want . Have set this up many times in a small office enviroment . Your comment about websites not loading and talking about ICS . Why use ICS unless you are on dialup? You don't use ICS with broadband . Thanks, yes, that's what I suggested to them and they do prefer the idea of using just a PC for file serving instead of a server . In regards to ICS . . . the reason ICS is used is because the XtraWireless works on PPPoE and the unit that Xtra supplied does not have a multi-port hun built-in . Attempts to install a D-Link router to establish the PPPoE connection failed miserably . I've wasted hours on ends listening to music on the Xtra and D-Link help desk . Both D-Link and Xtra help desk suggest that the D-Link router should simply work when the correct PPPoE credentials are entered, but tried two brand new D-Link router and neither worked . So gave up and reverted back to ICS at the end . The other two PCs are now connected via the main PC acting as a gateway . All is well now after we wiped Vista and put XP back on and the PC is flying now compared to running Vista . They can also dial up the PPPoE connection directly if the gateway PC is not connected to PPPoE already, so they don't have to rely on the main PC being powered on . |

You can pick up a decent router for a reasonable price ($100+), on the other hand. cheap as always will perform to cheap expectations. Why wireless? Running cables, although a pain in some situations, is far more reliable, secure and faster. |

Maybe relevant?? I felt for you over this HUGE waste of time you won't be able to charge for! I think many of us know at first hand about these dogs . There's also the potential for Vista tcp receive window scaling to upset some routers and firewalls . Personally, Vista has worked fine with networking and Internet access (the latter faster than XP) for me but I have my fingers crossed I don't hit a wall soon! All the best with your site! |

Running cables, although a pain in some situations, is far more reliable, secure and faster . Well, the DLlink is not the el cheapo router supplied by Xtra, I know about those . I've had two dead on arrival from Telecom before, two in a row! This is a Dlink DI-524UP WiFi router with USB print server . Incidentally, the print server part never worked with the Vista PC either, it worked fine with the XP PCs, very weird . These people are on XtraWireless because they are miles away from civilisation, there is no chance of them getting ADSL, not in a million years . The XtraWireless connection is based on some form of WiMax and they have a 'service unit' connected to a roof top aerial . The service unit was supplied by a Telecom contractor and not even supported by Xtra's help desk! I googled around about it and the manufacturer has released a unit with built in WiFi router as well but Telecom is not going to import those . So the only way to share this XtraWireless connection is to put your own hub/router in . That's where the DI-524UP comes into picture, it connects to the 'service unit' and the desktop PC then connect to the DLink and the laptop connects to the Dlink via WiFi . The tricky thing is, the Dlink cannot establish the PPPoE connection with the 'service unit' as expected, both Xtra and Dlink's help desk strongly believe that it should 'just work', but it didn't, I sent the Dlink back and got a brand new replacement, but still no go . Well, may be I got two dud one in a row again, but I was not going to waste any more time on this, so wiped Vista and reverted the gateway PC back to XP Pro, and the user lives happily ever after, so far . Personally, I do agree with you about WiFi vs wired . I have my 4 computers connected via a mix of WiFi and Cat-5, the WiFi connection has been reasonably stable, but I still plug my laptop into the hub when I want to do large file transfer or when I want to have a guarantee connection . P . S . I just realised that the ICS and Vista issue belongs to my other question, not this one . Somehow these two are getting crossed?? |
