579279 2007-08-10 22:58:00 Am I correct in thinking that:If I install another linux OS and I specify my present OS home partition then both home folders will be on that partition. kjaada (253)
579280 2007-08-10 23:18:00 ayup :) sharing settings etc for Gnome / KDE and whatnot as well as documents, if you specify the same username :) Chilling_Silence (9)
579281 2007-08-10 23:25:00 I do not want to share settings but what I want is a home partition with a folder for each OS on it with each OS settings etc in it.My desktop is KDE OS is PCLOS and I want to play with TinyMe before I put it on a USB flash drive. kjaada (253)
579282 2007-08-11 00:58:00 Then make sure you use a different user name for each OS. That way the shared /home will have /home/username1 /home/username2 folders.

You may have a bit of fun with user permissions involving each accounts UID and GUID and being able to browse the other OSs /home folder contents. Not sure how it would work if you set them both to the same UID number but with different usernames.

When you install the second OS, select the current /home partition for its /home partition, but make sure you DO NOT select the format this partition option. Be very careful.

You can also share the /swap partition without problems.

579283 2007-08-11 01:23:00 Thanks for that.I was aware of the format thing but was not sure on the "users' now know how to proceed. kjaada (253)
579284 2007-08-11 01:27:00 This will work, as long as it's a separate partition mounted on /home in each OS.

If each /home actually exists on the same partition as the rest of its OS (which is the normal situation), it will get messy. You would have to mount each OS's file system, then make a symbolic link to its /home directory.

I've rewritten this a few times trying to make it clear, but it's a tricky thing. :D
