580644 2007-08-14 08:23:00 The peasants are revolting. Excellent.

I think your being a bit hard on Jan and not least hypocritical with talk of ivory towers and such like.

Though I agree to an extent with the general thrust of the objections, just for ever so slightly different reasons. It'd be nigh on impossible to shut you gobby lot up and any attempt to do so will only give rise to more bellyaching than ever seen in a Delhi cholera ward.

Jan, how about simply flagging the threads that contain a solved issue and flag the specific post or posts that does the resolving. Obviously any attempt to provide info on resolved issue will require additional work from the Mods/Admins and a degree of cooperation from the original enquirer.

One difficulty in keeping threads strictly on topic is that, many posters will, or may feel, they have the same or a similar issue and jump in. Often times the the issue isn't the same and the thread will rumble on. In that situation, you can always ask the poster to start his own thread, but then you lose the any answers already given, or have to pick through relevant reply to move to a new thread.

So, I say let the threads go as they will, but flag the relevant bits for reference by others.

Edit: Another thought, if you flagged the posts with something that is searchable (Ctrl F in FF), it would help to pick out the gems from the excrement.

580645 2007-08-14 08:42:00 What I would like to see is, that, the person who is the thread starter should be the last poster.
Things like, thanks problem solved! or your stupid idea just wrecked my system. (just kidding). It would be nice to know if anyone actually helped someone. A lot of the answers are left hanging. Never sure if the problem is solved or not.
Too many threads die without an answer. This is not unique to PressF1, almost all forums on the net have this problem.
My 10c worth.

580646 2007-08-14 09:01:00 Typical, a vocal minority want everything their own way.
Suggestions like having Flags, and the person who is the thread starter should be the last poster are just nonsense ideas.
This is a forum, everyone can input whether useful or not and it works quite well as it is.
Just leave it alone or the more experienced members who are usually the most vocal and passionate are likely to go elsewhere.

580647 2007-08-14 09:07:00 Jan - it's a great suggestion. A couple of other forums I use - quite professional ones - also put an end to discussions when the query has been resolved. Unfortunately it does require a fair bit of extra moderation.

As for "The Clock" - some of us don't give a stuff, so I suggest you put it at the bottom of your agenda.

Wrong Safari. This is a help forum, at least thats what the header says. If you want it to be otherwise. Its all yours. I'm in the wrong place.

580650 2007-08-14 10:26:00 woah, you guys sure are an eager little bunch, brilliant

I think my original post might have been misinterpreted slightly, so let me quickly rephrase a few things .

threads that have had its original question answered will not be locked . This was never the intention . (I'll refer to these as 'resolved' threads so we're all on the same page . )

I merely want you guys as users to avoid letting threads get out of hand . The PF1 forums are there to offer technical help, and you guys are quite possibly the largest and best group of people in the country to do just that .

I think most of us want to avoid seeing what could be useful threads turned into personal attacks or unnecessary spam . Follow-up questions are of course encouraged and often very important to the possible solution to a problem .

We are not running out of space, this is in no way an exercise to cut back on content here . The more threads answered, the bigger the knowledge base and the happier everyone will be .

We will be looking to categorise resolved threads in the future, for easier access and reference to users . This is however not something we are currently doing, as we have a lot of projects going .

hope this helps, I encourage anyone with questions or comments to keep posting them here .

580651 2007-08-14 10:39:00 Just to throw my two cents worth in :2cents: There you go:lol:

What happens in the Microsoft Forums, is if a post is the right answer the person who asks can select a "right answer" button in the post . It then shows up in the forum with a big green tick so others can see the result . BUT it still requires the person to actually come back and make that action .

This would be a featre that PCworld would have to build into the forum site

580652 2007-08-14 10:42:00 That would be quite a good idea in this forum. winmacguy (3367)

Shouldn't be too hard to plug in a vB "Mark thread as solved" (www.vbulletin.org) mod.

I do agree though, sometimes PF1 threads waffle on when they don't need to.
