Very pleased to hear it... except that DST doesn't start for another six weeks yet. Geez, the forum time will actually correct itself by then at this rate. |

Hey Vista only took 5 years so I am sure that something as small as patching the forum clock is entirely possible. :) At least even a broken clock can be right twice a day ;) |

I guess we'll be looking forward to PF1-SP1 Service Pack then I take it? :p AS for topics going off-topic after the original question has been answered... I'm trying to care but finding it hard to do... a lot can be garnered from the convo afterwards. For example, when you interact in real life, do you cut things off when you have heard what you want? or do you keep the convo going to learn a bit more? If you're going to add a resolved button/whatever, expect more work... things (especially where computers are concerned) might appear to work, but in actual fact re-occur soon after. Therefore you will also need to unresolve the thread and re-open. Is it really worth it? |

| 580640 | 2007-08-14 06:09:00 | From now on, please refrain from adding your opinion to a thread where the original question has been answered . but we love the thread about a fridge that comes back every few months . many 90% of posts where made after the solution was provided . |

| 580641 | 2007-08-14 06:22:00 | Jan: I don't agree with what you propose and I don't think any question is finally resolved anyway . Many times there are greater things found and discussed in the thread that may not have much to do but in a minor way with the original post/request/problem . I learn a lot from the sidebar remarks more often than the direct answers to questions . Now . . if you can cross reference and somehow index them and allow the posts to just flow as they have for all this time, then I think you've got something . But . . to infer or even demand from the bully pulpit of your position that people refrain from adding to and indeed, even getting a little OT with the original problem, is truly a bad idea and one of the major things this site has going for it . When something gets too OT and freewheels into cussing, name calling and rudeness, then, YES . . and for sure you should and need to step in and separate the combatants . Other times, I feel that the posts self-regulate and even die of old age all by themselves . You would have to be very careful to not insult someone who honestly feels that their comment needs to be aired . If you think you can make the site smarter-looking and more regimented, then I don't think you'll accomplish much more than generate resentment no matter how people in PC World ivory tower offices feel about the situation . There really isn't much wrong with the site as it runs now . . making waves is not a good way to treat the inmates either . Personally, I am one who has been mightily profaned and I didn't go running to a mod to get it stopped . . . it just dies on the vine by itself . I am large enough to let things freewheel a little . . but that isn't the reason, nor should it become a reason, why you should interfere, and that's what I think it would be: interference . Besides . . . those who make derogatory comments will have their post visible a lot longer than they will probably be alive and will have to see their garbage for a long time . So . . from my perspective and puny bully pulpit, I say "NO" . . . . leave the site alone unless you want to rule with an iron rod . You might acomplish getting a well regulated, lockstep forum . . but then you'd just have only yourself to regulate; I think the life and color/colour of the forum would be gone . . . as would be a lot of the old- and just plain dogs . You'd just become the site mommy . . not a good idea . Now . . . I recommend the following: 1) Request that those with personal axes to grind (ie: over the value of THEIR OPSYS is great and all others are crap) . . . well, that should not be allowed . 2) "I-TOLD-YOU-SO's" are OK . . . up to a point . . and the point should not be belabored and ranted about ad nauseum . 3) N000bs should be treated with a lot of respect . . . it's their first visit and they are lost . Posters should not berate and insult them . . but texters might still be fair game . 4) I still believe a search cloud is a good idea too . Perhaps there should be a html <tag> device to use by posters to let the answers be found a little easier . Something else I'd like to see: A separate page where polls by site users about what OPSYS they run, their anti-ware and processors, expansion cards and monitors, etc, and how they all seem to work together, might be made available so that other people can see what runs successfully and well and plays well with the other programs, etc . I imagine this could be some sort of graph or numerical extrapolation for all to see within one or two mouse clicks from the Intro page of the site . Maybe a piechart or other visual aid would be good . This might just be wishful thinking, but there are questions that seem to be asked in great regularity and could be referred to by those who are trying to help and answer "What's a good OPSYS" or "Can I run two firewalls", etc . Successful systems and the info about them would be a good starting point for someone trying to get answers to what actually works . . . . . just an idea . . . you can ban me now if you want to . |

| 580643 | 2007-08-14 07:43:00 | I guess, Jan, that you are running out of storage space on your server. This may be why the clock is off time as staff will not be able to add the code. So what is a "resolved question"? Is this a question that has one definite answer which corrects the problem. I may also ask. How you would know that the problem is fixed? How will you know which person whom posts led to the resolution? XYZ member must also TRY to explain the problem. Preferably in something approaching English for me to be able to help in the first place. May I take it that YOU can take the time to answer all posts and do without the collective wisdom of others? I have often said that I know enough to fill a book or two. What I do not know will fill a Library! I think, from your post, that you want everyone to shut up. In PressF1 we have people pushing a barrow, people whom help, people whom try and help, people whom do not help and etc. There are people I have met on this forum face to face. Could I please have an answer from you about collective wisdom? Do it your way anyway. Be a Helen Clark!!!! |
