2007-08-13 09:50:00 | I guess it will be fixable - but then a reinstall of PCLinux only takes about 20 minutes so what the heck! Yes, probably shouldn't do it after the last disaster, but I'm going to try putting it on the same HD as my XP install... at least now I have a Vista laptop if it all goes pearshaped and life will go on :D

2007-08-13 11:03:00 | Granted a reinstall will only take 20 minutes or so. But what are you going to do if this happens again and you have a lot more data at stake. The OS is broken now, there is no data at stake, apart from a bit of time, what are you going to lose learning how to fix it from its current broken state (without the reinstall)? | Myth (110) | |
2007-08-13 11:44:00 | True, but then I no longer keep any important data on my comps. I have tried fixing it using some of the suggestions and I fully admit that it was me not knowing what I was doing that 'stuffed it'. I also really don't want a Linux box (well- HD) that breaks when I play with it, been there with Windows. I will sleep on it and have another go tomorrow, see what I can screw up then :)

2007-08-14 07:37:00 | Tell me Shortcircuit - what's the purpose of your wanting to run Linux? Just for a play? Because I need a challenge in my life and there are no mountains in Auckland  Seriously, after recently buying a lap top with Vista and being decidedly underwhelmed I keep hoping that Linux is going to make the grade rather than cutting the mustard . PC Linux almost got there, but the insruction manual self imploded :dogeye: I've never been a fan of Uncle Bill's tactics . . . DRM WGA, WMD etc and if I can get an opsys that does all the stuff I want without the aid of a Msoft logo, that's great . I have reached the point where I don't see much point in a learning curve, I'm wanting an opsys that works without too much agro .

2007-08-14 21:06:00 | ...just wait for Ubuntu 7.10! :D No seriously though, run xorgconfig and make sure that all references to "Driver" are set to "vesa" and see if that makes a difference!

2007-08-15 08:01:00 | A suggestion for the re-install: When I set the partitions up, I like to have /home on a separate partition. Running PCLinuxOS 2007 here and have / on /hda1; /home on /hda4. I also have Klikit-Linux on /hdd1 and /hdd5. Haven't had to do a re install of PCLOS yet but did do a re-install of Klikit into /hdd1, with /hdd5 selected but not for re-format. That way, my desktop was preserved after the install. I was put on to PCLinuxOS by Treestone in Nelson and it has proved to be very good - so much so that I ditched Xandros after 2 year's use. Jim
