580750 2007-08-14 03:59:00 My friend tells me that I need a new power supply. I've got some generic 300W thing that's about 5 or 6 years old...

At the moment i'm running these parts:
ASUS P5VDC-MX motherboard,
Intel Celeron D 946 (yes i know it's a celeron...)
64mb MX4000,
ASUS dvd drive,
Samsung cd drive,
80gb Western Digital HDD,
40gb Maxtor HDD.

My mate tells me 300W isn't enough to power those parts, and 5 years is to old.
Is 300W enough?

I'm also going to be investing in a new video card and processor soon. Most probably a 7600gt and a E6600.

Will I need a new one when I get those?

Cheers.

580751 2007-08-14 04:03:00 They are the most critical part of your PC (apart from perhaps the fan on your CPU) so yes, they matter. Metla (12)
580752 2007-08-14 04:08:00 They are the beating hearts of any computers. Without them, computers will not have electricity (blood) flowing through them.

Get a new PSU if you're looking to upgrade.

580753 2007-08-14 04:12:00 Most definitely. Minimum would be a 500w (or below if it is a real good brand).

The board you currently have will not support C2D only 945 chipset and up. So you would have to invest in a new motherboard as well to use a E6600.

Also power supplies degrade over time which is the reason your friend says it is no good as well.

580754 2007-08-14 04:37:00 Getting enough current out of it is probably the first thing (and most any PSU can do this, if rated high enough for your use), then (depending on how much you value the rest of your hardware) look at getting a good brand that won't blow up and take everything else out with it, or slowly kill your components with high ripple due to **** quality filters and other components etc Agent_24 (57)
580755 2007-08-14 05:08:00 Suggestions?

These are my main needs:
Future proofing,
I play games every few days if i'm bored so one that will be sufficient for that,
And one that won't break my parts as agent 24 said.

I know nothing what so ever about PSU's. So if there are any compatability things can you let me know?

E.g. certain power supplies for AGP and PCI-E or whatever.

Cheers.

580756 2007-08-14 05:16:00 There's a helluva lot of brands around these days. Which do you recommend as replacement PSU for an oldish pre-pPCI-e system? braindead (1685)
580757 2007-08-14 05:25:00 I have found this, doesn't come with any cables though I have to buy them seperate, are they expensive?

580758 2007-08-14 05:53:00 That PSU is really overpowered for what you need... and what do you say it does not come with the cables?

I am running a much more powerful system on 535W easily...

Personally Enermax is the best brand IMO. There is another thread around here with a lot of info about PSU, go and read that.

580759 2007-08-14 06:44:00 Ok i've read around on the net and came across this ENERMAX WHISPER 535W II EG565P-VE ATX2.0 BTX DUAL 12V SLI READY (www.computerlounge.co.nz)

It looks more than enough for my needs and looks good for future proofing. I don't care about modular cables and it supports both 20 and 24 pin mobos.

Would it be ok?
And are they hard to install?

Cheers.
