580350 2007-08-13 07:07:00 just a quick question with those who are with xnet
has anyone tried running a http server or ftp server while with xnet?
or used vnc remotely?

I'm sure I've forwarded the ports required correctly, and those settings worked when I was with another ISP

xnet does allow this right? I can't find anywhere that says you can do this..
so if anyone got this to work.. I better play around with my settings again..

580351 2007-08-13 07:11:00 I'm with Xnet and have remote access setup via SSL, VPN & VNC and they all work fine.
I can access my network from anywhere.
I haven't tried FTP or HTTP but I'm sure they would work too.

580352 2007-08-13 07:15:00 Ask PCtek, - may have an answer there. See this post Xnet (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) wainuitech (129)
580353 2007-08-13 14:23:00 Xnet don't allow you to run public servers - it's in the contract for getting a static IP, and if I recall correctly they block the significant ports for dynamic IPs - certainly they block at least port 25. That said, they were pretty nice about letting me run servers on those ports for private use - gave me a static IP and said they'd let me run pretty much anything I wanted, as long as it was for me rather than for the world.

I currently run servers on port 22 (ssh), 25 (smtp), 110 (openvpn) and 143 (imap). I also run an ipsec vpn with Dannz.

580354 2007-08-14 03:56:00 I'm getting connection refused on when I try to connect through ssh remotely
so looks like I need to ask them to open it?
I know about port 25 from t&c but no other ports were mentioned

ping and tracerout works though.. at least I know I can sorta reach my computer

580355 2007-08-14 04:32:00 You shouldn't have any problems with SSH.
I can access my server via SSH over the internet.
I am with xnet, and have a dynamic IP addres. (I use a dynamic DNS service).
Heck, I can even access it from the computers at uni...

580357 2007-08-15 12:09:00 installed firestarter on my kubuntu machine, where the openssh server is..
configured it and made sure port 22 is open for everyone..just in case my iptable settings weren't correct

tested again but doesn't work
no sign of anyone trying to connected to port 22 either
so..yea.. better look at router again then email xnet..

all this stuff works under LAN though..
anyone got any other suggestions?
