579814 2007-08-12 06:33:00 I thought I'd ask this in advance, seeing as I got sooo close with PClos...

I changed the mouse pointers and was told that I would have to log out of KDE for the changes to take effect (I had also been doing something with the Nvidia panel, but thought I'd saved that long before). Instead of logging out and back in, I shut down the comp and went to bed.

Next morning greeted with command line user/password and put the root info in then got to bash. Typed in startx and was greeted with a message along the lines that xserver could not be found/initialised.

So... can I do a repair install of PClos like with XP, or do I have to ditch the whole install?

I was beginning to like my shiny new linux with it's wobbly windows :)

579815 2007-08-12 07:57:00 Try startx again, then do this:

grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Show us the output :) (this will mean a bit of typing I'm afraid, Im not sure what PCLinuxOS's pastebin capabilities are)

579816 2007-08-12 09:11:00 Shutting down instead of restarting KDE is unlikely to have caused the problem.

YOu may be faced with editing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to get things going again. I am looking for a GUI interface like the Fedora one to fix this kind of thing but no luck so far. (In Fedora you go system-config-display)

579818 2007-08-12 09:24:00 Try startx again, then do this:

grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Show us the output :) (this will mean a bit of typing I'm afraid, Im not sure what PCLinuxOS's pastebin capabilities are)

grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log >LogFile.txt

would do the job would it not?

579819 2007-08-12 11:18:00 grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log >LogFile.txt

would do the job would it not?True, I forgot you could output to a file

I was actually thinking of another way, in Gentoo there is an application called nopaste, that allows you to pastebin (direct) the output of a command... all you need then is the link for others :)

579820 2007-08-13 06:19:00 Gosh, you broke you new shiny toy already?

At a root prompt, just re-run the nvidia xorg setup tool: nvidia-xconfig

That should hopefully set you right. Just check your resolution is still OK afterwards.

When you were fiddling with the nvidia control settings earlier and saved them, did you get an error about not parsing the file? The new xorg.conf that you saved back then, does not get "read" until X restarts, so that is why it threw a wobbly only when you went to load X (the desktop) again.

579821 2007-08-13 07:57:00 Me fiddling- never! :D

And yes, I broke it already :(

No, I didn't get any error with the Nvidia changes, but from memory I didn't log out of X before I fiddled with the mouse cursors and it told me to log off KDE.... if that makes sense!!!

I've got it a a spare HD (it wouldn't install on my Sata2 drive... apparently a known problem), so will plug it in later and give your suggestions a try.

Have to say- the more I played with beryl/compiz the more I like it, but that's me allover- more shiney than substance :D

579822 2007-08-13 09:37:00 Well, that was not fun. I tried nvidia-xconfig and it said "backed up and written new Xconfig file..." at # typed startx and kept getting fatal server errors. Tried XFdrake and went around the setup menu repeatedly. Looks like I munted it permanently and time for re-install :( Shortcircuit (1666)
579823 2007-08-13 09:46:00 I guess it will be fixable - but then a reinstall of PCLinux only takes about 20 minutes so what the heck! johnd (85)
