| 581445 | 2007-08-15 21:14:00 | What defines OEM in regards to what hardware purchase has to be made to make it a OEM sale . ? Was in Harveys Normans over the weekend, better half wanted to get something so I wandered off into the computers . . . . . of course . Since I am looking for a full version of a XP Pro CD for another system I am putting together, asked the sales rep who was tagging along 2 inches behind me for one . Reply was, yes, they could sell me a XP Pro OEM version but to get that I had to buy some hardware . That I knew . Ok, I will get a keyboard . Sorry sir, Keyboards are software, has to be hardware . Ok, I will get a mouse . Same reply . Ok, what defines Hardware to make it a OEM sale . If I bought a surge protecter of a minimum value, that would get me a OEM CD . I would have thought that a keyboard or mouse would have been enough to define as hardware to get OEM . Doesn't matter anyway now, have since got a full version WinXP Pro CD else where hassle free . |

| 581447 | 2007-08-15 21:22:00 | There have been all sorts of stories about what some shops regarded as hardware because any sale is cashflow. AFAIK MS regard hardware as something essential like a hard drive, motherboard etc that probably has an ID that counts for activation. | PaulD (232) | ||

| 581449 | 2007-08-15 21:42:00 | I was once told by my a MS supplier that the requirements for OEM are: "a piece of hardware that the Computer will not run without". A PC will run without the following. Keyboard and Mouse Optical Drive Moniter Floppy Drive Speakers & Modem Makes servicing hard though lol Usually what is required is one of the following. Motherboard or CPU Hard Drive RAM - Doesn't matter if the PC has already got RAM, a PC will not run with out it. [Quote from original post] If I bought a surge protecter of a minimum value, that would get me a OEM CD. Technically thats wrong. A PC will run without a UPS / surge protector. $ value has nothing to do with it. - thats just the shop. That question is not easy to answer, as MS's policy is not exactly clear. But from what I read in one of MS forums from a MS tech, that's changing soon. Seeing will be believing |

| 581450 | 2007-08-15 22:00:00 | vaeies from shop to shopp. some insist that you buy mobo and cpu before they will sell OEM windows. however you can get it from places like www.ascent.co.nz no questions asked ;) i did read somewhere that its the system builders responsibilty to ensure that its for a new pc. seeing as you are the system builder are you going to tell MS ?? :D |
