| 580912 | 2007-08-14 09:35:00 | I want to build a new system, I'm comfortable with XP so will use that as an O/S. I think the cheapest way to obtain xp would be to buy an old dunga running it, off of Trademe. I figure I can score one for under $100. But will it be tied to that mobo? Surely the engineers at MS would realise that a mobo will fail every now and then so I should be able to activate it again once the new system is complete, right? |

But you are also correct in what you say about if a board blows MS will normally re-activate the OS on a new board if the original board blows- you may have to ring them if it says its not valid after reinstalling, and answer a few simple questions, but normally theres no real worries. If you purchase an Name brand PC, eg: Dell, HP/Compaq, most of the time the product code thats in the Original factory install is not the same as the product code on the side of the case. According to MS it should be, but I personally have seen many compaqs all with the same OEM product key from the factory. The product key thats on these PC's are OEM, and "Legally" not "meant" to be reinstalled on another machine. When you purchase an OS the CD/DVD is worth Very little, its the actual Licence that MS say cost the money. The best way is to purchase the PC and Make sure you get the XP CD, "legally" its better to have retail box. |

The OEM pricing for XP varies depending on where you buy it, but its around the $160.00 range - give or take a few $$ |
