581284 2007-08-15 07:30:00 Welcome. :) (My personal choice is a secure OS that doesn't need the above mentioned apps.)

Would be good if EVERY OS was secure, BUT thats never gonna happen

I believe that it would be in Microsoft's best interests to stop it from becoming a reality since there is so much money tied up in 3rd party security apps. As long as Microsoft keeps telling the masses that their next version of Windows will be "more" secure than the last (yeah right!) the masses will be sucked in to it.

How can you be "more secure than the last system:confused: "? Your OS should either stop the intrusions/malware or not, there is no in between.

581287 2007-08-15 08:08:00 Hi guys.
Demonhunter you rock.

cheers, but what for? lol

Well they are free, but some may run out. Dont know if NOD32 expires I've never used it.

NOD32 you get 30 days for free, but you have to purchase it after this.
My recommendation is that you do pay for NOD32 ([edited])
and Comodo Firewall.
If you don't want to pay for NOD32, then get Zonealarm.
Do not get AVG, it is crap, and have never had any use for it.

Fair enough. just whatever works for you ae.
Personally i think that the risk of getting a virus these days is rather slim.
Especially if you have a properly configured firewall and don't go downloading crap from dodgey sites.
I think that spyware/malware are the biggest issues today. :2cents:

Especially the stuff that you can pick up from fairly from genuine websites that contains keyloggers that pick up your bank password.
I think the days if picking up the likes of the I love you virus from emails are long gone.

581292 2007-08-15 08:43:00 I agree, it is possibly due to the education of the average user now.
Most people know not to open attachments from people that they don't know - even if they don't know why!

The main prob is P2P, more than anything else.

People just dont know, how dangerous files are (or what they are / or what they install).

And I bet most people wouldnt scan (thats if they've got an AV program, in the first place), whatever before they use it / install it.

And people installing the wrong video codecs, which are trojans.

Instead of searching Yahoo/Google beforehand, to see what it is or what it installs.

You'll see from most of the HJT logs in here, they have one thing in common.

A P2P program is installed.
