581013 2007-08-15 03:03:00 Thanks for the comments guys. I'm reluctant to make it tap off another power source, for the pure reason that plugged into the motherboard it will kick into high-speed mode when the case temperature reaches a certain level. Hence why I figured that simply reducing the current going to it inline will still allow for it to go into a faster speed mode when it needs to. somebody (208)
581014 2007-08-15 04:07:00 There's nothing stopping you using the fan header, although it won't reach the speed it does now even at the hottest temp. Murray P (44)
581015 2007-08-15 06:36:00 Why not just replace it?
Glacialtech case fans are pretty nice

581016 2007-08-15 09:32:00 I could replace it, but given that I spent more on this PC than I had originally hoped to, I don't want to buy anything else for it. somebody (208)
581017 2007-08-15 09:59:00 I have a case fan in a PC I want to slow down... Does anyone know whether this will work, and if so, what size resistor do I need to go for?

Try a 47ohm half watt fixed resistor. I have a small100 ohm pot on the power supply fan, which gives a good range of control

I agree. I bought a 12cm case fan last week that sounded like a 747 taking off. Wiring a 33ohm resistor in series with the 12V line dropped the RPM from 2200 to 1450, cutting the noise right down while still providing enough cooling.

581020 2007-08-15 10:48:00 Get a 50 ohm variable res from tricky dicks works fine for me from stop to full speed just mount in the side panel get a knob as well all up about $5 drys (347)
581021 2007-08-15 20:48:00 Thanks all. I squirted a bit of silicon lubricant into the fan a couple of days ago and it seems to have quietened down a fair bit. I'll keep this in mind if the noise level starts picking up again. somebody (208)
