2007-08-15 05:09:00 | PCtek, is that an 640MB or a 320MB GTS? Solmeister, I had a look at the Gigabyte cases, they look ok to my eye. In fact, not too dissimilar to the Coolmaster C5, ie, simple but stylish lines and, only for those with discerning taste, good looks and sex appeal. I thought so too mate, however I'm told I'm wrong. Cases are only for looks, then airflow, then room.... I would mention in my defense however that I have just thrown my cheap nasty work tower away, due to poor design, lack of airflow and room. The Poseidan was a very good case for the price, toolless roomy and looks good in black! Poster, for whats its worth, if you are spending $250 - $300 for a dual core, I would spend the extra for the Quad. Some here will rubbish me, however apps/programs will over the next 1-3 years use the extra cores. While the dual core maybe faster, its not going to be much of a noticeable difference when you are already getting 60 - 80 fps. The quad core would be more future proof than the dual core....

2007-08-15 06:22:00 | Hey guys, wow thanks for the huge response. I'm looking at spending around $2000 in total inc monitor keyboard etc. I don't prefer AMD or INTEL so whatever you suggest.... If you guys think that the soprano DX will not be good for my layout / hardware or if they suck generally, what case do you suggest?? (keeping the budget in mind) perhaps just a soprano or coolmaster?? If you guys could come to an agreement on a list of parts which would be good for that price, i would be very grateful. Cheers, MonolithNZ

Standards my dear, standards. Do you not wish the bar to be raised? Do you like seeing other people belittle themselves, make fewels of themselves in front of there peers and family? More humanity. |

2007-08-15 06:49:00 | Monolith I could build you a good one for around $5000. I looked at upgrading what I have here, just M/Board, CPU, Graphic Card and RAM and my price tag came out to about $4000 on what I wanted. If wife had a say it might be $40 instead of $4000 considering this one was just under $8000 about 18 months ago:-( | Bantu (52) | |

2007-08-15 07:02:00 | Just another message, if the computer needs better specs then i am happy to bump up to the $2400 type of range Monolith, the looks of the case isn't such a big deal (te heh heh!), what is important, IMO, that it has a good robust build, good space for stuffing your goodies into and working on it, plenty of peripheral ports such as USB and FireWaire to the front/side panel, good cooling flows (space often helps), and for me personally good acoustics (quiete, which also often means good unimpeded airflow) . The latter will more often than not come with the first (robust, good build), the exception is aluminium which is a material usually only used in good quality well built cases (though that is not exclusive to aluminium), but it happens to be noisier than steel . I'd recommend not getting a case any smaller than the Coolermaster C5, one with tool-less installation (if you intend working on it yourself) and, if you get an opportunity to have a peek at the case before purchasing, look for thickness/rigidity of pressed parts (damn near the lot for steel construction) and attention to detail like smoothed or rolled edges (no sharp cutty bits) and allowances for cable management and, well designed fan mounts, grills, etc (no haphazard jangly bits, leave out the side mounted fans unless it has an air duct to direct flow and minimise noise) . For gaming I'd recommend getting the best video card you can lay your hands on for the budget and plenty of goodish quality RAM matched to the capability or your motherboard, say 2GB . To that end, the 8800GTS 640MB or even the 8800GTX would be nice . Don't bother with the mid to upper range RAM unless you plan to overclock . Stick with A-Data, Kingston Value RAM or perhaps lower value Corsier or Geill or some such if it's on special . There's no need to pay more than $100 per GB, much less is easily obtainable . If you're intent on getting an LCD, to enjoy those games and movies, get the best you can afford . Someone else can fill that in . AMD or Intel, Intel or AMD . Well I'd say AMD . because I'm a fan . If I'm being objective, I might still say AMD merely on bang for buck and the fact that they're still bloody good for gaming . If you're going AMD, there's no need to get an expensive nVidia 590 SLI chipset motherboard because you ain't going to be using x16 SLI x 2 . A moderately expensive 570 board will do, the better ones have most of what the so called high end 590 boards have anyway . HTH
