581471 2007-08-16 00:03:00 Hi there
I am sure there is a simple reason - but I can not get either my Norton Ghost (2003) or Paragon Partition Manager to clone from a SATA to SATA disk. Is this just an incompatability with these programs, do I need a later version? Ghost totally bombs out - locks up on reboot to the virtual parition. PM goes through, will copy from a IDE to SATA... but goes through the motions with a SATA-SATA copy, but on rebooting the second drive is unallocated and empty? Does anyone know of a program that will do this using SATA drives?
Thanks
Rob

Acronis should work, although I wasn't aware of any issues with Ghost and sata drives. Possibly I havn't tried sata II though, I'm not sure. It looks like pctek has had the same problem, ask her how shes getting round it.

Edit: I see you already have!!

581473 2007-08-16 00:14:00 Hmmm.... well give Acronis a go I guess. Yep, sorry - all SATA II drives justlookin (12132)
581474 2007-08-16 00:49:00 Acronis works perfectly, no worries there. I read someplace that as long as Norton Ghost is completely upto date then SATA works Ok, I have tried it with ghost and it worked OK a couple of times, then not the next time.

Personally Now I use Acronis - No problems at all.

581475 2007-08-16 00:59:00 If they're Seagate or Maxtor drives, hop over to Seagate and download the, newish, DiscWizard that now includes Acronis's image and cloning utilities.

It might even work with other drive brands, but try it at your own risk, don't take my word for it.

581476 2007-08-16 01:24:00 I have cloned one SATA II disk to another SATA II disk before using Norton Ghost.
Happened on accident. Was meaning to clone from sata2 to my IDE but accidently cloned it to my other sata2 hard drive (result = much swearing and loss of 150GB of data  )

What steps do you take to try and clone it from one sata2 to the other? it has been done before. Are the two drives completly seperate or just different partitions on the same drive?

581477 2007-08-16 01:28:00 Ghost 2003 does not like sataII.

The newer one probably does as it is not Ghost anymore really.

I didn't get around it, I used ACronis, which I don't like as much as Ghost, because while it has some good ideas, it uses DRIVERS! How crazy is that.

I use Acronis True Image 10 or Workstation 9.1 - Home version is cheaper.
There is of course many good cloning software programs, its what you personally like i spose.
To use acronis you connect the two drives to the sata headers, boot from the CD and it loads - takes a few minutes.

When booted it gives the option of safemode or full( reccomended) click full, and it loads, and finds drives. You are then presented with a whole lot of options / operations, select Clone.

It then gives the option of Automatic or Manual - I select manual.
The two or more drives will be there. ATA or Sata, while you cant see the contents of the drives, it does show the amount of used space on the drive so you hopefully dont accidently wipe the wrong one ( that was a bummer) the master drive shows as IDE0 ( even if its sata) with the other drives depending on what they are ATA or SATA will show differently.
EG. Main drive ATA will show as IDE(0) drive to copy to if SATA (IDE2)
If both sata, both show IDE(0)
Select the first IDE0 as master (as long as it is), click next, select destination drive, follow prompts, and finally it gives a summery of what is going to happen. Accept it if its right and away it goes. I usually if I can use different size drives when cloning customers stuff for reinstalls, that way hopefully you dont wipe the wrong drive.

In fact while I'm writing this I'm cloning sata2 drives right now in the workshop. A 160 -250

Eeeek!

WHat about booting it from a CD though?

I presume it uses a RAM drive so not much chance of driver vs windoze vs extraneous software clashes, no!

Edit: Wainui, that's bloody crazy, a drive utility that can't correctly, or perhaps explicitly is the better word, identify drives and partitions and their status.

I've done little cloning, but am about to dive in big time setting up my new system, so am I missing something?

Lots of "Name Brand" PC's dont come with a floppy these days, thats why I use Acronis from CD,and that loads to RAM.
