581068 2007-08-14 22:26:00 Hello Folks

I am a brand new computer user having bought my first computer in my sixtieth year. I must say that I am doing all right, although I have experienced a few 'beginner's' problems and challenges. The computer has given me a new lease on life. It's marvelous.

I do have a small problem at the moment, though, that someone may be able to help me with.

I'm using Vista Premium and it seems to have lost its ability to hold on to a desktop wallpaper. It doesn't matter if I use one of the wallpapers that came with the computer or download one from off the Net. Every time I reboot my computer I'm confronted with a blank screen and have to go through the process of setting another wallpaper, only to find that it, too, is gone next time I reboot.

It is, as I acknowledge above, a small problem, but I do like to have a nice wallpaper on my desktop and it's a bit of a nuisance having to reset one every time I turn my computer on.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Cheers

581069 2007-08-14 22:50:00 Hi Agoge and welcome to the Press F1 Forums.

I haven't had this problem before but one thing that may be the problem is:
Are you only logging in as a user with limited ablilities such as Guest?
This can mean that you are only able to change the wallpaper for the session that you are logged in on.

Do you know what the account type you are logging in under is?

581070 2007-08-14 23:59:00 Hello DemonHunter

I had a regular wallpaper on my desktop for the first couple of weeks of owning my computer with no trouble. The problem seems to have arisen out of nowhere.
I'm afraid I must have done something to have caused the difficulty.

As far as my account goes, it is just a regular one with Xtra.

Thanks

I was meaning the account that you log onto your computer i.e. Administrator, User, Guest etc.
Not your internet connection

Are you running any Anti-Virus protection that is up-to-date?
Have you run any Registry Cleaners lately?

581072 2007-08-15 00:19:00 Sorry, DemonHunter, that's just my amateurism coming through .

I log in as a 'user' .

My anti-virus (AVG) is up to date and I run CCleaner about once a week to check my registry .

Cheers .

581073 2007-08-15 00:23:00 Another thing, too, DemonHunter, I can extract a color desktop wallpaper by right clicking on my desktop and hold it indefinitely without a problem, but not a picture. Agoge (12669)

Don't worry about it.

Ok, go here (www.winmatrix.com)and do what he says to do.

To backup your registry, Start > StartSearch > type 'regedit' then you registry is opened up.
Be careful here, deleteing keys etc. will ruin your pc so don't touch anything unless you know what you are doing (or wish to re-install windows!)
carrying on: File > Export > save where you want!

581075 2007-08-15 01:38:00 Thanks, DemonHunter, I'll give that a go and report back, but it probably won't be until tomorrow. Agoge (12669)
