580988 2007-08-14 19:51:00 Hello.
I'm not too sure if I should be posting this thread here. Is there a code forum? Sorry in advance if I am, directions for where to post accepted! :blush:
FYI
I use Firefox (just updated to the latest) with tabbed browsing. I thought I was rather clever when I discovered (most likely the umpteenth million to do it) that I could actually have multiple 'permanent' tabs. But now I realise having half a dozen tabs 'always' there is a little daft. So I wrote a simple webpage that has hyper-links to all the web pages that I had as permanent, and made that as my permanent 'homepage'. This got me to thinking about whether I could 'launch' programs ON my computer using hyper-links.
Question
Is is possible using some form of link (hyper-link, form button, drop down menu, etc.) to launch a known program on the same computer as the webpage is stored on?
Cheers,

580989 2007-08-14 20:54:00 oh yes of course it is......i have had a desktop page which I wrote in html with hyperlinks to open programs it's easy.......

like this for example:

<br></br><br></br><br></br>
<p align="right"><a
href="file:///C:/Documents and Settings/p/Desktop/newsmail.exe"
target="open here"><font color="#FFFFFF">Courtesy
of</font> </a></p>

Yes it is possible. What exactly do you mean by "a known program"?

And the question begs to be asked why you want to know how to do this. Who's server are you trying to attack? What you're asking is very similar to websites that install malicious code into visitors with unpatched operating systems and vulnerable browsers.

580991 2007-08-14 22:13:00 Greg, I must admit I hadn't thought of all that. My 'plan' was simply to have one 'permanent' tab open when I was browsing. This would have links to my websites and to various programs that I use more than most. Like Notepad, Word, FileZila, Paint Shop Pro etc. All used to help make 'my' websites. I was thinking a bit like a desktop but so that I wouldn't have to keep going to my desktop, or use the Start menu. Not sure if it would be quicker, but as I said, it got a bit daft having half a dozen permanent tabs for various websites open.

And thank you 'drcspy'. I had something like that, but didn't know about the
'target="open here" bit. I think that's exactly what I'm after.

BTW I did see something about using a webpage as your 'wallpaper'. But I seem to think that one of the issues was that every icon on the 'real' desktop then had issues starting. Can't remember the out come, sorry.

580992 2007-08-14 22:22:00 Ah ok. Sorry to impute bad motives to your question.

And yeah, the code shown above should work, and to make it happen (in Mozilla based browsers) you could save the page as a bookmark, open it first when you log on, then open a new page and use it to make subsequent tabbed pages.

580993 2007-08-15 00:18:00 Adrain, I think you would find Opera ( . opera . com/products/desktop/" target="_blank">www . opera . com) to be a much more useful browser for your requirements than Firefox . It has a relatively new feature called "Speed dial" which provides quick access to your favourite websites when you open a new tab .

You can also save a session of your tabs and open that session with just a click or two rather than leave your half a dozen tabs open . Alternatively you could save those half dozen tabs in a bookmarked folder and open them all at once with just a click of the mouse .

Unlike Firefox, Opera is extremely customisable with multiple ways of performing the same task depending on your circumstances and, best of all, all of its features are built-in to the browser . That means you don't have to redownload extensions everytime the browser gets updated .

Regarding opening programs, you can create custom buttons to place on your toolbar for opening anything you want . I have a couple for opening webpages in either Firefox or Internet Explorer but you can create them for almost any other program . Have a look at this page ( . opera . com/community/forums/topic . dml?id=145608" target="_blank">my . opera . com) for more info if you are interested .

The Opera forums ( . opera . com/community/forums/" target="_blank">my . opera . com) are a great place to find out how to do things in Opera or for just having a browse for ideas on what features could be useful to yourself .

580994 2007-08-15 13:44:00 'drcspy', I think I made a mistake some where. I thought I copied (almost exactly with a little adaption) your code:

<p align="right">
<a href="file:///C:/Documents and Settings/p/Desktop/newsmail.exe"
target="open here">
<font color="#FFFFFF">Courtesy of</font> </a></p>
What I did was this:

<a href="file:///C:/Program Files/FileZilla/FileZilla.exe" target="open here"><font size="2" color="red">FileZila</font></a>

(copied straight from the source)
But every time I mouse click on the hyperlink, it keeps asking me to save the program, not open it! Any thoughts on what I've done wrong here? Should I be linking to a 'shortcut' to the program?

No worries on that Greg. I must admit, with hindsight (always 20/20, a?) it does look a little suspicious what I was asking!

In what I do (ok, play at) I have to use several browsers to make sure a page is 'compatible'. I have noticed Opera as quite a 'tidy' browser. So 'FoxyMX', I may take more of a peek at it, thank you.

580995 2007-08-15 16:34:00 hm........interesting.......i got that same result when I did it just earlier too.....wonder if its to do with how the browser is set to react to files cliked on the web where I dont get the 'open/run' option but only save........hmmmm...thinkin....... drcspy (146)
580996 2007-08-15 16:38:00 yep just re-tested it ......opened using default browser (firefox) it'll only give me the 'save' option ......however if I use IE to open it gives me the option to run/open which then 'activates' the program chosen...... drcspy (146)
580997 2007-08-15 18:32:00 If I right click the link and open in an IE tab, that does now give me the chance to run or save. I'll have to make a note to do that. But it does then leave an 'empty' tab. Maybe I'll take more of a look at Opera. If it is capable of launching programs direct, well I guess that is what I'm after! Adrain (12668)
