2007-08-14 10:03:00 | I am a PC World subscriber currently holidaying in the UK. My sisters PC has a problem with a CD drive that appears to be writing data (using Sonic Record Now software) but on completion the CD appears to be blank. She has never previously tried to write to the CD drive so there is no previous history. We have noted that the file system for this drive is RAW, whereas the PC hard drive is NTFS (as expected). I found a help site that said converting the RAW drive to NTFS would fix this problem and followed instructions to do so but got a message saying not allowed. Any and all help will be much appreciated. KB.

2007-08-14 10:33:00 | The NTFS hard drive is a red herring. RAW in CD writer terms is method of writing uncorrected data trusting the software. This is needed for example to duplicate disks with deliberate errors. The drive "appears to be writing", what does Sonic see the disk as, blank or not?

2007-08-14 10:37:00 | I am not familiar with Sonic Record Now but the file system will not be NTFS but may be ISO9660 or similar | mikebartnz (21) | |
2007-08-14 10:37:00 | The file system for a CD is CDFS or ISO9660 (or some variant thereof). RAW is the format of unprocessed images. I don't think that the file system of the drive can be RAW?? | johnd (85) | |
2007-08-14 11:37:00 | To JohnD - In Windows Explorer Properties box showed system file type as RAW. To PaulD - I used the software to erase the CD, which it appeared to do even though Explorer showed that it was already an empty disk, then ran the programme to write to the disk again. This took about three minutes, then the software ran a verification which brought up an error message saying "one or more of your files did not compare with their originals. Try again." The error box help had under Advanced, the following: Sense: 03 ASC: 11 ASCQ: 05 (Command BE) ------------------------------------------------------- px.dll: 3.2.46.500 pxdrv.dll: 1.1.95.0 pxmas.dll: 3.2.46.500 pxwave.dll: 3.2.46.500 pxwma.dll: 1.0.0.3 This whole thing has got me beat! | 580920 | 2007-08-14 11:42:00 | Wouln't RAW data have to written in packet(?) mode, a la the InCd format for writing a CD like a great big floppy? | Murray P (44) | |
2007-08-14 11:43:00 | Justa a thought, I'm pretty sure that KB3 can write RAW, though I'm not in Linux at the mo to verify that. | Murray P (44) | |
2007-08-14 17:06:00 | iv'e seen this happen many times with nero.....sonic i'm not sure of but check out whether the program has been set to USE the CDRW drive and NOT set to write to 'image file'.......if it is set to write to image file it'll appear to write the cd......go thru all the motions but you'll just end up with a blank cd... | drcspy (146) | |
2007-08-15 09:34:00 | To drcspy - you describe the symptons exactly, but I can't see where to address "check out whether the program has been set to USE the CDRW drive and NOT set to write to 'image file'". However, we tried a CD-R disk and copied the files OK. So it looks like the problem is with the original disks we were using, which were Memorex CD-RW 700 Mb 4x. KB. | kbcad (1025) | |

If u mean with Nero, its under the Recorder menu / choose recorder option, (where you can change from Image recorder to whatever burner), when you run Nero. It'll also let u select Image recorder or whatever burner on the burn screen, before you burn. (Thats if you have a DVD burner, and use Nerovision). |
