580855 2007-08-14 07:03:00 Hey there.

I have decided it is time for me to build myself a gaming PC spending around about $1500-$1800. But i can be flexible.

As i have never built a PC before i was hoping some people in the know could give me a hand in choosing the parts as that will be the hard part for me.

Now i would also like the PC to be good just for surfing the net / general use as well but leaning quite a bit to the gaming side.

I have decided on a thermal tech soprano or soprano DX - (which do you recommend?)

Some people have told me that a new power supply will have to be purchased with around about 550w ??

The main thing i need a hand in choosing is a CPU, motherboard, processor and graphics card. Please don't talk to much lingo as i have no experience at PC parts just PC use.

Your help is much appreciated.

Thanks alot.

580856 2007-08-14 07:55:00 What sort of games do you hope to play?

Does the budget include:

An OS?

Monitor?

Keyboard & mouse?

Other peripherals?

Hopefully you'll say just the box.

Your going to struggle to stay within your budget if you get a Soprano DX (sans PSU) then cough up more for a PSU.

Whether the Soprano VB cases with a 430W PSU will be suitabke will depend on what other power using components you choose. Most important here are motherboard, CPU and video card, with the latter the most likely to throw a spanner in the works re power draw.

Having said that though, with regard to what CPU and video card you will be able to afford, a good 430W PSU should be ok. The Thermaltake site gives no specs or hint as to the PSU they install in that case (that I could see), so hopefully someone with experience of these cases will happen along and give some objective advice.

If I were you and I was going to purchase a case sans PSU (a la the Soprano DX), I'd probably tend towards the Coolermaster Centurion C5 and save some $$.

Are you an Intel or an AMD fanboy? Is budget more important than allegience?

Oh yeah, welcome to PF1.

580858 2007-08-14 08:21:00 As Murray said, we need more info on what is included in the budget... (monitor, OS KB, Mouse, speakers etc etc etc) if everything you will not have all that great of a system... The_End_Of_Reality (334)

But they're pretty plastic ****.
And who cares, the case is for looks, airflow and room.
What is more importnat is what else goes in it.
Like the power supply.

How about something like this:

ASUS P5K
Core 2 Duo E6550
2Gb DDR26677
Seagate 320Gb
TT Soprano with Enermax PSU
ASUS 8800GTS

Assuming you don't need the entire system..........

580860 2007-08-14 09:33:00 What about a Quad Core seeing how cheap they are compared to a Core 2 anyway. Might as well get it now. beeswax34 (63)
580861 2007-08-14 11:39:00 PCtek, is that an 640MB or a 320MB GTS?

Solmeister, I had a look at the Gigabyte cases, they look ok to my eye. In fact, not too dissimilar to the Coolmaster C5, ie, simple but stylish lines and, only for those with discerning taste, good looks and sex appeal.

And since there is hardly any software let alone games that actually use quad core cpus, what would the point of that be?
Get a faster dual-core cpu.
