582512 2007-08-19 00:19:00 Is there any free software to rip an entire CD to a single MP3 file? My flatmate buys a lot of electronic mixed CDs & doesn't like ripping them to separate files since the songs all run into each other. Greven (91)
582513 2007-08-19 00:29:00 What ripping software does he currently use? winmacguy (3367)
582514 2007-08-19 00:34:00 Audacity.
www.sourceforge.net/audacity

Free open source sound editing and recording prog.
Record the entire CD in real time and save as an .mp3 file.
Works a treat. Good for lots of other useful stuff as well.
Good luck.

582516 2007-08-19 03:16:00 I agree with using Audacity but not with the suggestion of recording in real time. That's slow and defeats the point of a good audio editing program. Download this program and you can easily join the tracks:

1. Import all of the tracks in order using File -> Import -> Audio.
2. Use the time shift tool (looks like <->) to move the second and subsequent tracks so that the start of each track lines up with the end of the previous one.
3. Select all of the tracks by holding shift and clicking on the track details panel to the left of each track.
4. Select the menu item Tracks -> Mix and Render

You now have a combined track. Save to a format of your choice using File -> Export.

Edit: The export option is called "Export As...". I also forgot to mention that you should rip your audio to MP3 files using as high a quality setting as possible. I don't believe Audacity will read WMA files so this could be a trap. Ideally you would use FLAC but that's going beyond what you really need.

582517 2007-08-19 03:17:00 Link? winmacguy (3367)
582518 2007-08-19 03:25:00 On third thought the Mix and Render step might be unneccesary. It probably does this automatically on export. TGoddard (7263)
582519 2007-08-19 03:26:00 Link?

Link was given by JackStraw - it's the same program.

582520 2007-08-19 03:28:00 Ah, I didn't realize you were talking about the same app. winmacguy (3367)
582521 2007-08-19 06:01:00 Is there no 1 step program? He may be prepared to pay for the convenience, but free would be much better.

He currently uses musicmatch for ripping. not sure what version.
