582488 2007-08-18 09:39:00  Have an AMD 2.4 (ECS M851 motherboard) with 128Mb AGP and 256 ram. Have put a Swann 4 port camera capture card in and the motherboard gives about 10 short beeps when the software loads. These are not at boot up, but when the Swann software is started. The feed from the camera shows but once the software settings or playback function is entered the picture freezes. Running XP Home with all updates.

I know the PC specs are not right for the capture card so don’t need to be told that. Have run these cards in lesser PC’s both AMD and Intel. The PC was using a Pico 2000 capture card but even though this worked the software options was crap and not very user friendly so changing.

Anyone now what the 10 approx beeps would mean? If bios beeps then I would say ram but have tested the memory with memtest with no errors. Next step is to replace ram but I can’t find anything that relates to the beeps while in windows.

582489 2007-08-18 23:47:00 Sounds to me like the software is doing something your motherboard doesn't like

have you tried updating your program for the card, or the drivers, maybe motherboard drivers also?

582490 2007-08-19 02:04:00 Sound like a lack of memory causing a buffer overflow to me. As you say "The feed from the camera shows but once the software settings or playback function is entered the picture freezes."
It would seem that at that point you run out of memory and whilst you may have enough virtual memory the swapping to disk may case a tipping point.
Have you tried disabling unneeded programs in startup?
Can you install more memory?

Can't find the motherboard on the ECS or PC Chips website no to updating the chipset.

Yes will try 512Mb ram but the camera software should run on 256Mb. Have stopped what processes I can.

Cheers

582492 2007-08-20 21:20:00 Put another 256Mb Ram in it and still makes the beeps. Looks like the motherboard just not up to it. Thought that may be the case. Just never heard a motherboard beep like that from within Windows.

Cheers
for the comments.

582493 2007-08-20 21:26:00 Some boards will do alternating high-low beeps when the CPU is too hot Agent_24 (57)
582494 2007-08-21 01:29:00 Assuming you have a AMI bios 10 Short Beeps means the shutdown register for CMOS RAM failed. Pancake (6359)
582495 2007-08-21 02:48:00 That should only be at the POST though

although this... www.pcguide.com

Perhaps the card is incompatible, need Bios update?? (or configured badly)
