582247 2007-08-18 00:24:00 I guess this is often asked, but with new software coming out all the time it may be worth asking again.
I back up my PC to an external hard drive, generally just the "My Documents" folder. At the moment I delete the External HD and copy the folder anew each time.
What back up software (preferably free) do users recommend that only backs up new or changed data on the external HD?
Many Thanks,
Graham.

582248 2007-08-18 00:47:00 Synctoy (www.microsoft.com) From Microsoft is FREE, you can backup to any externals source either external drive or network location, and it has LOTS of options as to how you want synchronization to back up.

It will copy original files/folders as selected, over write, or simply update existing files/folders. Your choice as to what you want it to do

582249 2007-08-18 02:35:00 Thanks for that, it looks good. I had to download Net Framework to install it (I wish MS would make their downloads page a bit more user friendly for multiple choice stuff like that!). Will have a play next time I'm doing a back up. Grimy (3041)
582250 2007-08-18 04:06:00 Acronis is a good one but unfortunately it is not free. Pato (2463)
582251 2007-08-18 06:23:00 I hate to admit it but for an MS product but Synctoys is really good (for me at least). It is easy to use and once a month you can fire up all the computers on the network and synchronise/backup every thing new. So long as my house doesn't burn down and destroy all three computers and their hard drives I am OK. MACIAN (6176)
582252 2007-08-18 06:58:00 Another vote for SyncToy ... I can easily back up my computer at the end of each day, and it doesn't take more than around 2 minutes :) davehartley (3487)
582253 2007-08-18 07:09:00 Blimey - Thats 3 good comments regarding MS synctoy, Better not tell MS that they have a good product they may start chanrging for it:lol:  wainuitech (129)
582254 2007-08-18 07:32:00 Actually (dare I say it!) they do have a few goodun's ... I've used their MSR Group Shot software a lot, and it works well too. Shame about their OS's, tho ... davehartley (3487)

I know - :p

Just installed the OEM version which came out a couple of days ago, been using the Beta/RC1 - Now transferring over 165Gb of Data - or Junk as the Mrs calls it.

Just a footnote: the system / data backup -restore works great on WHS. Had my main drive fail a few weeks back. Plug in new drive - drop in recovery CD, 25 minutes later all completely recovered, OS/Data the lot as if nothing had happened.

Sorry Grimy, but WHS is not free :( - Its a whole server
