You were ahead of the times... we had to do everything digitally.

When I was at high school we had to write our own programmes in basic or something. Exit and run commands... that is about all remember.
No GUI... no mouse.

582065 2007-08-18 03:16:00 Ok, after reading through most of this...

Super fast speed = opportunity....HOW? That's like saying I don't have the opportunity to download a full length movie because I can't do it in 55 seconds. From my understanding, and yes I am at school, the most computers are used for is research and/or typing up things and they do the job just fine. Probably just over half of it is offline too. (powerpoints, word docs etc)

I'm not against schools getting faster internet, just saying they don't need it.

Wasn't there a time many years ago when the schools didn't have computers? Did those people without access to a computer at school turn out to be cabbages? Sure, educational standards might have improved since computers, but with a few exceptions, what can be done (par time frame) on their super fast speed, PROBABLY could've been done before.

By opportunity I guess that I mean doing all the cool stuff that useful Web 2.0 makes available today... then I suppose in the future an opportunity to do things that couldn't be done without reliable service and reasonable speed.

Once upon a time dial-up was all a school needed.
By the end of the year all teaching staff at this school will be doing reports etc online. Quality of service and a speed boost is needed.
Is KAREN overkill? I'm not sure.

We are possibly coming at this from two different angles.
Rocket speed isn't necessarily exactly what I'm asking for.
Although I wouldn't complain if we (staff and students at the school I work at) had it.
Current speed doesn't cut it. Students here get frustrated and tend to be less productive because of this.

The Internet to some extent removes the walls from a classroom and makes the world your classroom. People still need question and verify information... that is a skill that students need to develop.

With Google earth you can see and explore places that you are studying.
With Skype or other vid conferencing tools one can talk to students on the other-side of the world.

Balance is needed.
The cost however is a major issue. Still need to buy books and sports equipment.

When I first went to secondary school I used a fountain pen . I, and others, were not allowed to use a ball point pen . This as the teachers mentioned it may destroy my handwriting skills . In Primary school I learned to dip my pen into ink . This was not a quill pen .

I ask again .
What school?

582068 2007-08-18 04:49:00 Integrating the computer components into the LCD is to me the most bizarre and poorest designs I have ever seen.

I'm amazed the market accepted it.

All the disadvantages of a laptop, without the advantages of a desktop.

Funny then that Apple has won a number of design awards with the iMac.

582069 2007-08-18 04:51:00 Nothing wrong with macs in schools, the robustness of that pretty design will be interesting to see.

I think it is more the peripherals that will wear out rather than the iMacs themselves considering they don't take up a lot of desk space compared to a regular PC.

And you can shove any tosser design award where the sun doesn't shine, right up their with restaurants that think they produce art and magazines giving nortons top ratings.

You know what the population of wankker city is made up of?

Lets see what they look like after some kid knocks them off the desk.

If that was the case I would be having a few words to the kid to explain how how to treat computers. iMacs don't fall over just because some kid happens to touch them or brush up against them. They also tilt to adjust to the user. They also weigh around 15-20Kgs judging by the weight of my iMac.
