| 582704 | 2007-08-21 02:14:00 | This answer is in another thread. "I had no problems with Outlook Express or Webmail but could not send in Thunderbird. No answers from Xtra on this but there is a simple work around given to me by a friend. 1. In Thunderbird go to Tools. 2. Click on Account Settings. 3. In the left hand part of the Account Settings box click on Outgoing Server. 4. On the right hand side under the resultant 'Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings' click on 'Edit'. 5. A SMTP Server box opens. 6. Under heading 'Security and Authentication' unclick 'Use Name and Password' box. 7. Click on OK in both open boxes. 8. Send yourself a trial e-mail to check that problem solved. It is not your SMTP settings or your anti-virus or firewall software or whatever else the help desk tries to tell you it is." I just tried that and it seems to have worked in Thunderbird. |

| 582705 | 2007-08-21 02:29:00 | since the bubble implosion my wifes Outlook keeps popping up a Network Error and asks her to enter user name and password for pop3.xtra.co.nz with option of adding password to the password list. Outlook will work once or twice ok after entering user name and password but then drops out again. The email account is set up ok with remember password ticked and test messages sent ok. Any suggestions on how to fix?? |

Thank you, thank you. Finally, have wasted most of day trying to send my mail. |

| 582707 | 2007-08-21 04:22:00 | Surprisingly this has whole thing has stayed out of mainstream news which must be a blessing for the Xtra PR folks. I've only seen an article in the NZ Herald on line. Well, I'm a bit mystified about what you mean by "mainstream news"? I watched a TV1 news item about 6.15pm yesterday (probably still on their website?) which covered the main points i.e. stuffed email systems, spam flood & HelpDesk inadequacies. An Xtra spokesman gave one of those "only a few customers affected & it's fixed now" rubbish replies. I'd already heard several reports during the day on Radio New Zealand National's bulletins. As Coldclimate said, NZ Heraldonline had it (And as a PF1er had said earlier: "with 18 pages of comments already lined up") Someone else in the forum said there was something on TV3. This was all before you posted. I doubt that Xtra's PR team was feeling blessed. So which branch of mainstream news do you think was dragging the chain? |

So which branch of mainstream news do you think was dragging the chain? ------------------ Hah Ha....well it depends if you consider RNZ mainstream ! Must have blinked on TV3 cause I watched their late news and didn't see anything. I sent out an email at work on Monday morning about the issues (hey I'm in IT, so always get the questions if someone's got issues at home) Feedback I got from folks at work on Monday (probably have a few radio stations covered) was they hadn't heard much. The classic one was one of the staff who did ring Xtra helpdesk during the weekend was told it was a problem with her Macintosh & she should ring a apple dealer !! Notice the CHCH Press had a article in today, quoting "The head of Consumer Propositions" Adrian Littlewood as saying "one or two" people had lost their email in box int he switchover, but the problems were being resolved ! (full article & quotes here: www.stuff.co.nz ) Actually....the amusing thing about that is what the hell is a "Head of Consumer Propositions" ? Does it have a body as well....limbs...fingers ? This From the stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy..... ( http://plato.stanford.edu/ ) "Propositions, we shall say, are the sharable objects of the attitudes and the primary bearers of truth and falsity. This stipulation rules out certain candidates for propositions, including thought- and utterance-tokens, which presumably are not sharable, and concrete events or facts, which presumably cannot be false." Gulp...... |

| 582713 | 2007-08-21 22:39:00 | What does unticking that setting do? Is it a security risk doing so? That setting is for setting up secure SSL for the SMTP server. You don't normally login and authenticate when sending mail so it is not required. |
