582602 2007-08-20 02:33:00 I also have had problems with the new upgrade (or downgrade). I run Opera at home and couldn't go through the login sequence without it looping me back to the original screen. Eventually got through to a human (don't you hate the automated voice and the lack of a choice to press numbers to get through to a human? I just repeat 'F*** you' until it puts me through to a human) and informed them of the problems. The helpdesk was oblivious to any problems people were having so I referred them to these forums.

While on the phone to them, I succeeded in going through the login procedure and accessing my email using IE instead of Opera. I didn't have to install any software to do this - I don't think you have to do so unless you want the extra features.

I wish I had the old system back. The spam is now delivered into a bulk folder, when before, it was never delivered at all, just deleted. There is no facility for reporting all this spam as before unless you transfer it to your inbox first. How stupid is that? Why not have a spam button in the bulk bin, or if it has already been IDed as spam, why deliver it?

I also have to go through a portal front page to get to my mailbox, I can't go directly into it after loggin in. Very annoying.

Since I already have another Yahoo ID to access email groups, I now have to log out of one ID and log into the other to switch between mail and egroups. More keystrokes needed. Another annoyance.

Opera can access my mailbox but only after logging in a number of times before it goes to my mailbox. And login again before I can view my inbox. Another annoyance.

And another annoyance just discovered. Spam in my inbox is reported with the spam button, it then transfers to your bulk folder. When you empty the bulk folder it transfers to your trash folder where it again must be emptied to delete it forever. Logical?

And they call this progress? If it wasn't for the fact that I have never changed my email address all the time I have been on the web, I would look to change ISPs.

I have not had to change any settings in my Outlook to send or receive emails.

Laura: I use my webmail to access my email from work, as I am sure many others do. It is also good to access it and delete spam before downloading my emails at home.

582603 2007-08-20 02:56:00 Thanks for the explanation, user.

I hadn't thought of that.
Friends I contact at their workplaces all have different email addresses there from their home onea.

Edit:
Hhmmm...

582604 2007-08-20 04:00:00 Burst bubble.

Xtra is my ISP but I have my own email service associated with my web site. I had to opt out of Port 25 filtering to get it to work. Since the update I've been unable to send any email (except by logging in to my own webmail service). So having reported the problems to Broadband@xtra.co.nz and received a reply (that totally failed to address the questions I asked) I had to reply using Gmail. The irony of that made me laugh which is more than the crap service from Xtra did :annoyed:

Oh and how about that nasty automated help desk assistant. :horrified - I'm pretty calm normally but I felt like shouting at 'her'. Seems they don't want to know about issues that aren't in the script! Ah well. Life goes on. Orcon sounds promising... or Actrix... or...

The polite way, in case the kids are around was actully written a few months back in NZ PCWORLD .

when the ever so polite voice starts yacking, press the Number 0 five times on the phone, it skips it ahead to the next boring part , repeat 3- 4 times . I suspect it may also put you first in the que, as last time I tried it came up saying 45 min wait, then 15 seconds later holy *** a Xtra person .

582607 2007-08-20 04:33:00 Don't know if this has been mentioned or not but there are 18 pages of disgruntled people on the NZ Herald site. www.nzherald.co.nz intel hunter (6666)
582608 2007-08-20 05:25:00 Cheers for that I'll have a read. I mentioned that I wasn't getting email because I have been receiving emails till this afternoon. I am guessing it will be getting a big mention on the news tonight followed by some "wonderful" Telecom PR spin. winmacguy (3367)
582609 2007-08-20 05:51:00 I too have been having problems with Xtra email

The settings that the Xtra tech guy gave me are:
Pop3.xtra.co.nz and click the Use Secure connection SSL which changes the port to default 995.

Outgoing server (SMTP) server name: send@xtra.co.nz & change the port to 465 buy clicking the radio button SSL

This seems to enable me to send & receive e-mail.

582610 2007-08-20 06:16:00 After changing my ordinary xtra settings I can now send/receive with that account.

I have not changed anything with my business account (since I was told a month or so ago to change it to officemail.co.nz). Now with this account I can send e-mail but I cannot receive... I imagine that there's a dozen or so e-mails from clients just sitting there waiting for me :(

582611 2007-08-20 06:44:00 Hell, I’m glad you guys are sharing the Spam load.

I can’t get onto my Webmail, but can get through on POP3 using Outlook Express. PopTray is hard at work.:D

I’m sure one could expect better from a company the size of Xtra.

Every time they do something it just makes there system worse!
