582694 2007-08-20 08:02:00 Interesting so many having problems.

Mine finally cured by changing the port settings and going to ssl. An email from xtra says in part.......

In the 'Outgoing mail (SMTP):' field, enter '465'.
18. Tick the box underneath marked 'This server requires a secure connection (SSL)'.
19. In the 'Incoming mail (POP3):' field, enter '995'.
20. Tick the box underneath marked 'This server requires a secure connection (SSL)'.
Did this around 4.50pm and...........

All came right about 5pm tonight!!!!!!!!!!

I hope you all get a fix. Thanks to all for responses etc

Leonidas

Is this in Outlook or Outlook express?

I installed Xtra Broadband for a friend this evening and I can't get Outlook Express to send and receive - It keeps giving me a 0x800ccc72 Invalid password etc, goes on about ssl.

If I put those settings in will it fix it?

have tried everything it's driving me insane, waited on hold at Xtra for 40min- gave up waiting.

Thanks

582696 2007-08-20 08:20:00 Very weird....

I advised two friends to change their smtp settings to send.xtra.co.nz and
that got them going again.

However I can't send emails if I implement the change.
Going to SSL doesn't resolve the issue either.

582697 2007-08-20 09:33:00 Changing smtp to send didn't work for me changed ot back to smtp.
But changing the ports as suggested and using SSL did.

I'm using Outlook not Express

582698 2007-08-20 09:52:00 (As indicated in another thread (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz)) I've successfully used smtp.xtra.co.nz, and turned OFF the secure authentication for sending. Left the port at 25. That seemed to work for me. davehartley (3487)
582699 2007-08-20 12:01:00 Well, that's a change in the last few hours.....the Xtra techs must be panicking.
(I had tried that around 6pm with no luck just before trying send.xtra.co.nz and trying ssl connections)

I can now send email without authenication using smtp.xtra.co.nz on port 25.
Wahoo....first time mail has gone out since saturday.

What a screw up....Is the project manager for this straight out of Uni ?
(or maybe they out sourced it off shore !)

Surprisingly this has whole thing has stayed out of mainstream news which must be a blessing for the Xtra PR folks. I've only seen an article in the NZ Herald on line.

582701 2007-08-20 12:49:00 That's assuming they aren't on xtra and can reply to the invite !

(Actually I just found a small reference on Tv3 site as well....)
They must be doing other nasty reconfigs as well - because even using telnet on port 25 to the smtp servers wasn't working at one stage.
Wonder if they're reconfiguring firewalls etc as well ?
Might explain the complaints about a lot of spam flowing past the filters....

Anyone checked for open relays on the xtra servers ? (a pure sign of desperation if they've gone this far)

"The mail must get through".....oh wait, sorry that only covers analog mail.
(with apologies to NZ Post)

582702 2007-08-21 01:17:00 I may have missed something in the forum

..... Can't send mail via xtra smpt server but getting mail via xtra pop server.
I have made no changes, using latest Thunderbird for mail.

My fault or telecom again?

Any advice appreciated.

This answer is in another thread. "I had no problems with Outlook Express or Webmail but could not send in Thunderbird. No answers from Xtra on this but there is a simple work around given to me by a friend.

1. In Thunderbird go to Tools.
2. Click on Account Settings.
3. In the left hand part of the Account Settings box click on Outgoing Server.
4. On the right hand side under the resultant 'Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings' click on 'Edit'.
5. A SMTP Server box opens.
6. Under heading 'Security and Authentication' unclick 'Use Name and Password' box.
7. Click on OK in both open boxes.
8. Send yourself a trial e-mail to check that problem solved.

It is not your SMTP settings or your anti-virus or firewall software or whatever else the help desk tries to tell you it is."
