582665 2007-08-21 09:22:00 I think Bob_the_lob was saying he had to restart as opposed to cold start the computer before being able to access the BIOS.

Thats what you have to do with any PC (reboot and press a F key or del to get into it).I've never had to reboot my computer just to get into the BIOS, you just access it as it first starts up.

582666 2007-08-21 09:34:00 I meant if youre in windows already.

You would have to reboot.

And yup u can get into it as soon as you turn the PC on.

582667 2007-08-21 09:57:00 Yooooo Speedy:D :D , I think he may mean ( well this is how I read it) that if the PC is turned off, then started and you press F keys etc, it wont go into the BIOS. But if the PC is running, then reboot - it will.

Is this correct Bob ?

You can go into the BIOS from a off/ to on, I do it all the time with New PC's. Press the start button, hit delete several times, and by the time some thing actually appears on the screen, its saying words to the effect " entering setup ....." then I change the boot order to Floppy( if its got one) CD/HD, reboot and boot from a CD/DVD to do what ever.

Edited a few sec later :
Man you guys type fast:lol: by the time iIwrote the above there was two answers lol.

582668 2007-08-21 10:06:00 Yeah, Jen and wainuitech are understanding correctly. Of course I do have to be out of Windows to get into the bios, but it won't go in unless I have specifically told the computer to restart beforehand - doing a cold start (even if the computer has been on seconds before) doesn't go into the bios. :) Bob_the_lob (10622)
582669 2007-08-21 10:23:00 I could be wrong here:help: But it almost sounds as if the Keyboard is not active untill after the POST/ boot has been completed.

Then on a reboot, as we know the PC doesn't actually fully shut down, only reboots  Guess that why its called "reboot" and the keyboard is still active from the previous start:confused:

Bob - by some real remote chance do you have a USB keyboard plugged in and using that ?
wainuitech (129)
582670 2007-08-21 12:24:00 Yes, I'm using a USB keyboard with it... but during my attempts to get it to work I tried it with a PS/2 keyboard and that didn't work either. Bob_the_lob (10622)
582671 2007-08-21 21:07:00 Okay, the USB keyboard explains why that wont work, as I have found the USB ports are not active untill after you pass the point to enter the BIOS, and by then its to late .
It should work with the PS/2 OK though:confused:

Have to think about that one .

Once in the BIOS though , even after the reboot, can you change it back to default settings ? or can you alter the settings to what you wanted to do in the original post ?

As strange as it is, if you can do what you want to within the reboot, and it's working OK, then I really can't see any harm in leaving it the way it is .

At the least its a small piece of security, as in no one else knows how to get into the BIOS to change things aprt from you:thumbs:

582672 2007-08-22 07:30:00 The USB keyboard sort of entered the bios (temporarily showed a black "Setup" screen) just like the PS/2 one when f10 was pressed after a cold start.

But it works fine once I'm in, and I can change settings in the bios as needed, so all is good. There is no setting that seems to refer to this bios behaviour though.

Just thought it was a bit weird and interesting, worth mentioning.

582673 2007-08-22 08:01:00  Its one of those problems that a fix will suddenly hit ya in the middle of the night, or weeks down the track. As long as you can get in and alter what you need, then alls not lost. wainuitech (129)
