| 582034 | 2007-08-17 11:34:00 | Your tax money is now being split to help fund those lucky 5 year old ba****ds in Nelson with some of the (if not THE) fastest broadband in New Zealand. Seriously, (and this slides OT a bit) why do schools need high tech, fast internet/computers? On Campbell Live the other night, the principal (it was a kindergarten I think) said with their newfound fast internet, they can now talk to poets and other 'people', connect schools together etc. YOU CAN DO THAT ALREADY. They then showed they could download a full movie in 55 seconds. I can really see how that will help their learning. Education movies, yea, sure, nice, but arent all of those outdated and on VHS anyway? Yes, just my bored rant. I have over 250 desktops and laptops sharing one standard telecom broadband connection through a proxy server... I wouldn't mind some of that speed. I'm not even talking about video conferencing. It is the world we live in dude, the computers don't all need to be high tech... Internet speed on the other hand needs to be usable and reliable. |

Yet they get funded for faster broadband, just so they can do things that are already possible. I guess I'm just mad a bunch of 5 year olds get faster broadband than me, just seems like a waste imo. |

Have you tried sharing a standard broadband connection with 200, 50 or even 30 other users? The example they showed on TV was probably pretty stupid. Yes funding through Probe should get fast access out to rural areas where broadband may have previously only been possible over electric fences (joke). But schools need fast access. I'm not sure what you mean by already possible. What is the speed that they are getting anyway? |

In one post you say "a school" Later you refer to the fact that "I have 250 computers" Did you say what you meant to say? For example "It was going to cost Me $800 The word "Me" does not mean anyone other than you . |

| 582039 | 2007-08-17 11:56:00 | You said you're with Telecom? That's your problem right there to start with :P Schools have FAST ENOUGH access. Seriously, what do schools need FASTER internet for? Aside from the "*sigh*...this is taking a while to load" factor, they still get the job done and do what they're made to do. The speed they were getting was (i think) either 200k, 20k or 2k faster (lol cant remember) than the average speed we get. Like I said - full size movie in 55 seconds. Now, why do they need this? This was at a kindergarten as well as a high school. Whatever good they're gonna be put to now (aside from the porn movies being downloaded in seconds while the teacher aint looking) could've been done before. |

Remember the loyal scheme thing I mentioned at the start? Telecom currently pays for all the Internet and phone bills for the school that I work for . Students research topics, the informations comes in various formats, video, text, audio, flash and images . When a whole lot of people are searching and learning from a dynamic information source that requires better capacity than currently on offer to most schools . You seem kind of fixated on the fact that they download a movie real fast . Some students - particularly - high school, require tuition not available at their school, video conferencing is one way to achieve this . |
