582023 2007-08-17 10:07:00 Some time back I posted a thread asking about the best specs for Windows Vista - school multimedia PC . We are primarily a Mac School .

Anyway Telecom ditched the loyalty programme for schools . . . why? My view is that they could not make it work in the future . I predicted as soon as the Govt said that they would break the company up into separate thingys .

As a school we lose our main provider of ICT resources, so we decided to stick with Apple . Otherwise we'd end up with a top heavy Apple network and still need to invest fairly heavily in Windows server stuff just to run 40 or 50 PCs .

So, we now have a bunch of shiny new 20" iMacs . Just arrived yesterday .
They look fantastic . Still not too sure if I'm a fan of the new keyboard .
The mouse still bugs me . Not so much the one button, just the nipple . Stupid . Glossy screen is very nice .

Kid's helped me get them out of the box and set them up and they just drooled the whole time . The 17" iMac next to the 20" looked embarrassed .

iMovie has changed dramatically . I just kind of stared for a moment and didn't quite know what to think of it . Apparently you can download iMovie HD for free if you buy a new Mac . Oddly enough the older version may be better at some stuff .

I'll have to hide the Frontrow remotes . Push the menu once and half of the machines respond .

I think that staying with Apple was the best decision for us, as there is too much uncertainty financially . Will the Govt pick up the tab that Telecom has dropped?

Downside . . . the eMac is gone, the 17" CD writer based iMac is gone . . . buying a Mac got suddenly much more expensive .

Just laughed when I read your reply.
So what's up? Does crap describe Apple in general or the specific iMac in question?
Can you qualify your statement?

In answer to your concern. No, uncle Telecom paid for them.
Hence the dribble about Telecom's loyalty scheme that they run and are discontinuing for schools.

582026 2007-08-17 10:28:00 Crap as in over-priced.

Nothing wrong with the gear, Nothing fantastic either, But if its paid for by Telecom then more power to ya.

Fair enough. Yep once Telecom stops giving us free stuff... the price point on Apple hardware will be difficult to stay with.
The financial uncertainty, as I said is almost the only reason we stuck with Apple.

I'll be curious to see if the Ed market walks away from Apple.
It was going to cost me $800 to get the LCD screen fixed on a 17" iMac just a few months over warrantee. Silly pink line down the middle.

The all in one thing has some real drawbacks.
Decided to just either live with the line or buy a cheap 19 or 20in external monitor.

582028 2007-08-17 10:48:00 Integrating the computer components into the LCD is to me the most bizarre and poorest designs I have ever seen.

I'm amazed the market accepted it.

All the disadvantages of a laptop, without the advantages of a desktop.

Hmm the keyboards still do the same job . Aren't they mighty mice with 5 buttons? I hate glossy screens .

Hmm, yes . For this reason we stopped getting 17 inch iMacs a while back . . .

Good to see the eMac go they gave me hernias and a nightmare to service .
I believe you still can get an Education Only 17 inch iMac with Combo drive (at the moment at least) .

Pretty much it. to enable it to stay cool... specs lean towards low heat.
I haven't heard any fan noise all day. Which kind of disturbs me a little bit...
I understand that it's pretty much a laptop with a big screen, but not really a laptop. I think that my HP laptop makes more noise.

The small footprint I guess is one aspect and less cable clutter.

Yeah, but the eMac was so cheap. Ok I have had to move quite a few today so I'd be happy not to lift another. Environmental disaster anyway.

Wait till you use one(keyboard), they feel odd. I'm more concerned at how well they will last. Apple mice and keyboard cables seem to wear out, exposing the wire way too fast. No sure how robust the keyboard will be. It is like a laptop keyboard.

Apparently these screens have a bit of anti glare. My room has very little natural lighting, I'm not sure how they would go in a normal classroom. Seriously they look great. Time will tell I guess. With laptops your environment changes regular like. Might be a diff issue with desktops, shiny screens and all.

A shipment of 17" iMacs came in with the 20" refreshs. I heard that there were some big orders for the 17"... so I'm not sure how long they will last.
The mouse is mighty... I'd just prefer a scroll wheel to the daft nipple.

Your tax money is now being split to help fund those lucky 5 year old ba****ds in Nelson with some of the (if not THE) fastest broadband in New Zealand .

Seriously, (and this slides OT a bit) why do schools need high tech, fast internet/computers? On Campbell Live the other night, the principal (it was a kindergarten I think) said with their newfound fast internet, they can now talk to poets and other 'people', connect schools together etc .

YOU CAN DO THAT ALREADY .

They then showed they could download a full movie in 55 seconds . I can really see how that will help their learning . Education movies, yea, sure, nice, but arent all of those outdated and on VHS anyway?

Yes, just my bored rant .
