583518 2007-08-21 11:35:00 Have older pc with Windows XP with ata drives . Do not see large HD total capacitiy .

If I put a PCI sata card in with a sata HD will XP see the SATA hd as a slave if the orginal ATA HD is set as a master using the end connector and an ATA slave using the middle connector .
I read on a link that SATA drives are all seen as master?
I would like to use the hot swop SATA feature for backup with the existing HD loaded with WIndows remain as it is now .
XP sees the master HD as a critical item in its activation setup and dont want removing / installing SAAT HD to require re activation after several changes .

Will XP be able to read a large HD or will it still be limited to existing HD limits?

Thanks

583519 2007-08-21 11:41:00 If there was a BIOS update that may fix the hdd prob .

Or if you install SP1 or 2, if you havent installed one of these yet .

Thats right MOST SATA are only Master not slave . They dont have jumpers .

Unless its a SATA 2 hdd, which will have a switch to change to SATA 1 . If the mobo doesnt support SATA 2 .

I would say it'll still be Master if u put a SATA PCI card in, BUT it should recognise bigger hdd's, since it'll have its own chipset onboard .

583521 2007-08-23 11:22:00 From what i can make of your post you simply want to add an extra hard drive for storage? Am I correct to assume you don't want to run your OS on this drive?

Master/Slave is a redundant idea with SATA drives, while SATA drives don't technically run as master this is probably the easiest way to think of it. You seem to be confused in the fact that your assuming that the OS must always be on the master drive, this seems to be happening a lot lately on these forums. You can install your OS to any drive whether its master, slave or a SATA drive, you do need to specify in the BIOS what drive to boot from though.

If you install the SATA drive using a PCI controller then your motherboards BIOS will have nothing to do with the drive as the controller card has its own BIOS, thus its unlikely to upset the status quo.

583522 2007-08-23 14:45:00 well I have a pci sata card and a single ATA drive set as master......the system boots from the master perfectly happily and the SATA drive is showing as slave......very easy......oh and btw....for some strange reason my ATA drive is set to slave anyway tho its on the master (end) connector) on it's own ide cable......but it boots up perfectly well.... drcspy (146)
583523 2007-08-24 12:02:00 Thanks for all your posts . A lot of my initial questions have been answered .

With the PCI card able to see full drive capacity if I installed an external sata drive via USB2 . 0 it would allow easy removable storage but would it be slower than an internal Sata?
I may decide to load Win XP onto it anyway as a lot of posts give faster operation to sata HD compaired to ATA HD
