| 583253 | 2007-08-21 02:24:00 | Hi all, Im with Ihug but I usually use Orcons DNS Servers (Force of habit I think coz they're easy to remember and Ihugs were havin issues for a while a year back: 60.234.1.1 & 60.234.2.2), but today about an hour ago they just *died* on me.. I could get sites like hotmail.com, pressf1.co.nz or ihug.co.nz but not the likes of Google, or teatatubaptist.com, or some of my other sites Went to Ihug, added their primary DNS instead of 60.234.1.1 & left Orcons secondary as my secondary, and it works fine now Anybody else havin similar issues? Might hafta memorize Ihugs, could be a good idea for me to know two ISPs DNS servers... never know when it'll come in handy. Chill. |

| 583254 | 2007-08-21 02:31:00 | That sounds a bit like Orcon has a DNS issue with overseas sites I would use ihugs DNS servers for a few days then latter on in the week try Orcon ones again & see if they work OK again. |

| 583256 | 2007-08-21 03:23:00 | On the morning of 21th of this month Orcon will disable recursive name server lookups from non-Orcon IP Ranges. This will mean that people outside our network using our name servers will not be able to look up DNS for any domain which we are not authorative for. This should not cause any issues at all unless people have hardcoded our name servers (60.234.1.1/60.234.2.2 or 210.55.12.1/210.55.12.2) into their machines and are not on our network. list.waikato.ac.nz Pretty much they're saying that since you're not an Orcon customer, their DNS Servers will no longer recursively lookup DNS queries for you. So if you query Orcons DNS for sites that they do DNS for, you'll get the record you require, but for sites which do not use Orcon for DNS, you either won't get a response or the DNS Servers will respond with the IP of the DNS server to query for the record. Xtra did the same thing a while back and from memory Ihug have done the same thing in the past few months |

| 583260 | 2007-08-21 20:09:00 | You'll probably find this is because the poprular records will be cached - google/hotmail/gmail and the likes. So their DNS Servers will be serving out the cached records rather than the Authoritative ones - hence why some domains were resolving and others weren't. |

Never had any problems. Chill, you may want to check out opendns.com :) Telecom did issue a warning late 2005 that they were doing the same with the "old" DNS IPs and setting up new recursive servers list.waikato.ac.nz "We are happy for external people to query those IP's for DNS troubleshooting and similar purposes but they should not be directly configured into machines. Please note these IP's may change from time to time and external access may be limited or withdrawn without prior warning (especially in cases of abuse)." Why worry about setting DNS addresses? |
