583233 2007-08-21 00:40:00 If anyone has thoughts on the following, it would be appreciated...

All I want to do (heh) is to get my Windows Home Server's web pages up?? The WHS web page configuration wizard doesn't manage to get itself configured properly when I try to do it automatically. I have also turned back on uPNP against my better judgement.

I have a Zyxel DSL router on 192.168.2.1 (subnet mask 255.255.252.0) and port forwarding to 192.168.1.102 (my WHS server) on ports 80 and 443.

I have a Linksys wireless router on 192.168.1.1 (255.255.255.0). I'm also forwarding the same ports (just in case) to the same IP address. The Linksys has a gateway of 192.168.2.1.

I then make a citrix session to my work LAN and try to ping back or get any other connection to my external IP address. No go.

Perhaps I need to port foward from the Zyxel to the Linksys to the WHS server?

Obviously I'm doing something wrong but if anyone could tell me what it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
Jon

583234 2007-08-21 00:51:00 Looking at your network settings it looks like the Zyxel is in the wrong subnet (255.255.252.0) while the rest are 255.255.255.0

How have you got everything connected?
The Zyxel connected to the WAN port on the Linksys etc...

583235 2007-08-21 01:42:00 With windows Home server you should'nt have to set up any port forwarding. The WHS software should automatically set up what it wants / needs.

What Cyabro put needs to be altered on your settings to what was suggested. 255.255.255.0

One listing you put doesn't look right

Unless you are running a different network the PC's may not be able to back up. try setting the Network Connections (TCP/IP) to obtain automatically. Since the Server is meant to be on 24 / 7 the router will give it the correct address.

The ports that do neeed to be open on the router are:

Port 80 is standard http
Port 443 is secure http (https) using secure socket layer connection (SSL)
Port 4125 is for the remote desktop connection.

I set up the OEM version in the weekend and it loaded every thing perfectly.
it also runs a lot more stable than the RC1 & Beta.

As from Microsoft it is not advidsed to run WHS as wireless( if you are), hundreds of people have had lots of problems with wireless as its to unreliable.

Yes, it goes WAN > Zyxel > Linksys > LAN. I had set the Zyxel subnet to 252 so it can see the 192.168.1.x and .2.x addresses. 252 in binary is 11111100, so the mask should pass through 1.x (00000001) and 2.x (00000010)??

Perhaps I should set the Linksys and PC's to have the same mask so they can see the Zyxel. Or port forward the Zyxel to the Linksys and port forward that to the server?

BTW, I can browse from my PC to the internal webservers of both devices so they're on the network to my mind...

Is the WHS connector on the PC's able to bring up the WHS Console?

Yep. And the website config wizard gets about 4 green ticks (iirc) before deciding the auto configuration isn't working and then issues a few red crosses.

Another side issue - my WHS server crashed and I've shut it down at the mo- "Unable to load operating system"! I think I need to faff in the BIOS to reconfigure the HDD to be recognised. Although it saw it before. Anyway, I won't be able to test anything for a day or two until I get that sorted.

Bummer, One thing I did read from MS is that sometimes when you install WHS it loads fine, but on rebooting it wont detect the OS correctly. It has something to do with the SATA setting, if using auto. But this normally only occurs on the first reboot. and obiviously yours was working OK. If you need to reinstall the OS thats no problems. WHS automatically partitions the drive into 20GB for the system files and remainder of drive as storage. When reinstalling it only formats the OS>not the storage area, so all data is safe.

Mine did the same thing as yours when connecting the first time, but not as bad, at first it showed all green:thumbs: Then lost two of the connections, after shutting down the router/modem/ switches in the LAN then turning all back on - away it went and has been ok since.

Might have got a bit screwed up / lost somewhere. LOL

I dont know if you are using wireless on the WHS but I read this on the WHS Forum -

"You can use your whs in wirless lan, but whs should be wired to your dsl router.

Backup not supported over wireless lan, but still can use the share and a like within your whs for your wireless pcs."

583240 2007-08-21 20:01:00 You could try making the Linksys router the DMZ entry for the Zyxel router, then you'd only have to worry about the port forwarding in one place. MushHead (10626)
