583263 2007-08-21 21:19:00 Xtra did the same thing a while back and from memory Ihug have done the same thing in the past few months

Actrix is another that did the same a while ago.

583264 2007-08-21 22:34:00 Telecom did issue a warning late 2005 that they were doing the same with the "old" DNS IPs and setting up new recursive servers list.waikato.ac.nz

"We are happy for external people to query those IP's for DNS
troubleshooting and similar purposes but they should not be directly
configured into machines.

Please note these IP's may change from time to time and external access
may be limited or withdrawn without prior warning (especially in cases
of abuse)."

Why worry about setting DNS addresses?

Agree. Don't bother setting DNS addresses. It is getting to be a normal procedure for many ISPs to do this so if Obtain DNS Automatically is set it can save a lot of confusion.

583265 2007-08-22 12:41:00 I know, I know, I know... But as said, Ihugs werent the most stable things a while back, and I found that Orcons updated faster. I needed that at the time, hence why the machines were configured like that... Chilling_Silence (9)

Same story with Xtra's DNS server (& they are still not the most stable things!! & Xtra DNS servers are s l o w to update)

:(

Why worry about setting DNS addresses?

1. Xtra DNS servers are not all that stable & they are s l o w to update
2. I cannot access the internet if I don’t set DNS servers.

583267 2007-08-22 19:15:00 2. I cannot access the internet if I don’t set DNS servers.Ditto. (well kind of, one could still access the net if they knew the IP's of the sites they are going to)

Besides, if you buy a router from the shop (in others words, not pre-configured) it will generally require the input of DNS servers before you can browse the net

If you buy a new router you have to configure it with your username and password anyway so you make sure it is set to obtain DNS automatically.
Most routers have this set as defauly anyway.
