583107 2007-08-20 09:24:00 My daughter has been using various USB devices on her XP PC for some time. Recently the machine has stopped allocating drives letters to any device (e.g. pen drive or camera).

In disk management you cannot manually allocate a drive. The device has not taken a drive letter of an existing drive.

From disk management you can explore the device to get to the files - but his is not convenient!

Has anyone come across this before?

This (www.softwaretipsandtricks.com)

Sounds similar to your prob.

And it was a corrupt daemon tools install. Or something it installed was corrupt.

Just checked - as I thought - no. Thanks

But my daughter has advised that swapping to another USB port seems to solve it - might be faulty USB?

583110 2007-08-20 10:05:00 Thats possible, it could be a faulty USB port.

Where's the port that doesnt work??

Is it one of the onboard ports, or a front USB port? On the front of the case?

She's not using a USB usb for any of these is she?

As not all USB devices like or will run, when its plugged into a hub.

583111 2007-08-20 10:17:00 Quite an old case - the only USB ports are on the back directly from the motherboard. She is not using a hub. johnd (85)
583112 2007-08-20 10:32:00 It sounds like its faulty, OR depending on what KIND of USB devices she's plugging into it (whether powered or not).

The only other reason is coz its old, the PSU isnt that high (like round 400W or something), and the USB port cant handle whatever you've plugged into it.

Like, this can happen if u plug a USB device in (that also runs off mains power).

BUT, you just plug the device in (without connecting it to the mains as well).

A USB port can only handle up to 500Ma , any higher (if the device needs mains power too, and you dont use it), the port will fail to work.

583113 2007-08-20 11:24:00 Under USB what do you see when in Device Manager you check show hidden devices? (View/Show hidden devices). Are there greyed entries? linw (53)

I will find out - the PC is not at my place.
