584098 2007-08-23 19:42:00 A while back my monitor just stayed black when I turned on the computer. No POST or messages or anything, just a black screen. My monitor works on another PC so it's NOT a bad monitor. Since then I've tried a different video card, a new mother board, a different power supply. Still the same problem. I tried a different monitor on this PC and that monitor stays black also. About the only thing left is the processor. Is it possible for it to go bad and cause this problem? Also, I've just read that ram may be able to cause it. I haven't tried that yet either. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

584099 2007-08-23 19:54:00 Does your current motherboard have integrated graphics (onboard)? If so, have you tried removing the graphics card and using the onboard graphics?

Granted you have no graphics on startup, but when you turn the computer on, do you normally get a beep from BIOS that indicates all is ok? Does that still happen?

If you get no beep (when normally you did), I would be looking at replacing the CPU

584100 2007-08-23 21:40:00 Yes RAM can cause it to not boot. WHich is what I presume you mean about the monitor. Can you her the PC boot up - like HDD noise? If not, its not even booting.

Your troubleshooting method is rather expensive.

584101 2007-08-23 21:50:00 Just to get right back to basics. Is what ever monitor you're trying getting power? You could be reusing a faulty cord or have a dead socket on your power strip. PaulD (232)
584102 2007-08-23 23:55:00 Like he said - he tried the montor on another comp and it works fine, so nothing to do with the monitor - tho it could be a power supply prob.
This may be a rather basic answer, but have you tried a new battery?
I presume you prolly have, as you said you tried another mobo, which would have its own different baterry?
just a thought

584103 2007-08-24 00:12:00 I've seen people swapping hardware on the top of the desk and reusing all the cords and the fault ended up being one of the power, lan, modem cords etc PaulD (232)
584104 2007-08-25 07:10:00 No, the computer doesn't really sound like it is booting up. I don't remember this computer ever beeping when it was booting up so I can't be sure from that. The motherboard doesn't have integrated graphics so I can't try that. Like I said, a different video card did the same thing on both motherboards. As for my troubleshooting methods being expensive, the only thing I bought was a mother board off of eBay. The rest were used parts that were known to be still good. I'm going to take a stick of ram out of my other computer in the next couple of days and see if that cures the problem. If not, then it looks like I'm finished with this computer. I won't replace the CPU as it's a socket 478 that is getting pretty much outdated anyway. Thanks for all the thoughts. I'll let you know if I fix it and what it was. iguana (89)
