584029 2007-08-23 09:11:00 I appear to be having some problems with our Windows XP Machine. At unusual intervals, for no apparent reason, the computer completely locks up - and not just the usual lockup. The mouse cursor no longer moves at all and no keys respond. All sound stops - it goes completely quiet. Also, all networking stops (other computers can no longer access the system resources)

It has happened at various intervals - other systems accessing networked data, opening a program, putting the computer into standby (it froze just before it went into the 'Windows is going to sleep' screen), and various other times. Even the soft power button doesn't work, and I have to do a hard shutdown to restore the computer.

Recent Changes to the PC
- Uninstalled Norton Internet Security in favor of Zonealarm and AVG. However, Norton Internet Security Control Panel has no uninstaller, and I'm not sure how to remove it
- Changed computer screens - however, this is not likely to be the problem
- Started Running Scotty, the Windows Watchdog

A while before the problem started I had been using Litestep as a desktop shell, and changed it back to Explorer when the problems started - no change in the freezing.

I don't believe Apache could be the problem - The installation isn't accessible from an external network.

I'm scanning for viruses as I write this, as well - however, it is a somewhat long system scan...

584030 2007-08-23 09:19:00 To completely remove Nortons, go here (service1.symantec.com)
I would try uninstalling/disabling Scotty, and see if that helps

584031 2007-08-23 09:20:00 Get this for Nortons (service1.symantec.com)

If you can, get trojan remover and rogueremover in my sig. Insttall and update both, and click on scan on both. Then select all options in the utilities menu in trojan remover.

And also get hijackthis in my sig. Put it in its own folder, run it then click on scan the system and save a log. Copy and paste the log here.

584032 2007-08-24 06:26:00 Thanks for the replies

Trojan Remover didn't find anything I didn't already expect
RogueRemover didn't find anything at all

I ran HijackThis just before I posted in this forum - nothing in the Log I didn't already know about, and the online analyser didn't mark anything as suspicious

As I was going to post this reply earlier, the computer did it again - only this time it also beeped loudly in a continuous tone, similar to the Blue Screen of Doom sounds, only there was no Blue Screen of Doom.

I've wondered if it could mean potential hard disk failure or RAM problems, which could both account for the computer crashing when networked to, or opening a program, etc.

584033 2007-08-24 07:42:00 Download memtest (http://www.memtest.org/), burn the ISO and run that, the long beep usually means RAm, depending on the motherboard.

Different Mother boards have different beep codes. Normally anythng apart from a short single beep at start up is hardware problems.

584034 2007-08-24 08:16:00 If you don't have any ISO burning software try this Imgburn (http://www.imgburn.com) its free and easy to use. wainuitech (129)
