2007-08-23 03:30:00 | Hi Team The backgound: I run a home office/family network of five computers, three for me and one each for my children. Four run W2k and one W98, all have Outlook 2000 installed and ZoneAlarm. My ZA is the last version before the big upgrade of a year or so back and I have kept it because it is trouble-free and doing the job. In any event, my problem predates that version of ZA by a year or so, but it was never an issue until the kids got old enough to want to do their own emailing. Networking is through a D-Link DES -1008D switch and Net acess via a D-Link-504G router. All networking runs fine including printer sharing etc and all web access is ok too. I have four email addresses, all separately hosted, one Orcon, one Xtra, one Yahoo and one Freenet. Each has several aliases on it. The Problem: I can email globally and also between my three computers from one address to another in any combination (useful for transferring messages from the Freenet account which does nothing but watch a US Forum) but the other two (kids) computers will only download, I cannot persuade them to send emails at all, no way, no how. Everything in Outlook is configured exactly the same on all five computers and I am tearing what's left of my hair out trying to work out what is stopping me from sending from those two. I have looked at ZoneAlarm but can't see anything that would stop transmission, so I'm at a loss to know where to look next. Any ideas? Cheers Billy 8-{)

2007-08-23 03:41:00 | Error messages? ZA logs? One of the machines must have win2k installed, right. What does the event viewer say? Have you tried releasing and renewing the IP addresses (IP Config) and what does the router say about the traffic and allowed ports/protocols, I've never used a D-Link, so just a stab.

2007-08-23 03:51:00 | Try disabling ZA to see if that is the prob. Sorry, forgot to mention I did that, no difference. One of the machines must have win2k installed, right. What does the event viewer say? Four have W2K: 2 +w98 work fine, 2 (kids) W2K don't send. Cheers Billy 8-{)  P.S. It is a plain vanilla network, no special configurations, pretty much plug and play.

2007-08-23 03:59:00 | What AV does the problem computers have. Might need to disable Outgoing mail scan in the AV And as mentioned by Murray, error messages are useful. It must tell you something when it fails to send

It must tell you something when it fails to send All have the same AV (Nortons) and TTBOMK they are all configured the same. I never enable outgoing mail scan, met and dispatched that problem years ago. There are no error messages displayed whatsoever, the sends just disappear into the ether so to speak (in actual fact they just sit in the outbox). I do all configuration changes, my kids are totally disinterested in computers as anything other than a tool. No games, no blogs, no downloads, no Utubing or anything unorthodox or risky, which means it is unlikely to be anything they have done. In any event , the problem has existed for years but has only just become an issue. Please note that I have already said that disabling ZA makes no difference. Cheers Billy 8-{) |

2007-08-23 12:37:00 | Can you export the account, then import it into Outlook express on one of the PC's that can send, and then see if you can send from the imported account. And do the reverse, Export an account from a PC that can send to one of the kids PC's and see if it can send/receive. Tools>accounts>highlight the desired account>select export. Tools>accounts>import>browse to location where you have the account saved. Off the top of my head an exported account will finish with an iaf extension.

2007-08-23 13:10:00 | Have you read the troubleshooting page for the DSL-504G router at D-Link ( . dlink . com . au/tech/" target="_blank">www . dlink . com . au)/tried the following? Specifically this: Cannot send/receive e-mails You do not need to configure anything on the D-Link router for your e-mail to work properly . If you have access to the Internet you should be able to send/receive e-mails . Verify the following steps if you lost the ability to send or receive e-mail after installing a D-Link router: Verify your E-mail client settings Step 1 . Make sure you do not have any firewall/antivirus software running on the computer . Disable the firewall/antivirus software temporarilty to see if it fixes the problem . Step 2 . Contact your e-mail provider (i . e . Internet Provider) and verify your incoming (POP) and outgoing (SMTP) mail servers . This information is normally available on the Provider's support website . The Provider should be able to assist in the configuration of the e-mail client . Step 3 . If using Outlook: Go to Tools > Accounts > Mail . Highlight your email account and click Properties . Click the Server's tab . Get the name of the SNMP Server . Make sure that the name of the server has the domain suffix specified (e . g . 'mail-hub . bigpond . net . au', not just 'mail-hub') . Step 4 . Open a command prompt . Go to Start > Run > Type: 'cmd' > Press OK . Type: 'nslookup ' to get the IP Address of the server (example: nslookup mail . earthlink . net) . Step 5 . Enter that IP address in Outlook in the space for the SMTP Server on the Accounts tab . Click OK . If you continue to have problems with your email try changing the MTU settings on your computer (set it to 1200 or lower, up to 600) . Changing MTU on computer To lower the MTU size on your computer you can use utilities like Dr . TCP or TCP Optimizer . Alternatively you can follow the steps in this document: . dlink . com . au/Products/!Routers/MTU_Win2K . XP . pdf" target="_blank">files . dlink . com . au
