583828 2007-08-22 11:23:00 My Asus P5K mobo has one ATA/IDE slot that takes an "old-style" master and slave combo. No problems there. Installed and running fine.

However, when I added a SATA slave HD using one of the P5K's well-endowed SATA ports, the SATA drive placed itself as Drive 1 in the HD hierarchy. My ATA/IDE master HD is now Drive 2, and the slave ATA/IDE HD is Drive 3.

I have two active OS partitions on Drive 2 - one for audio, one for video, and one is hidden from the other.

Now that the SATA HD has hogged the Drive 1 slot, I can no longer use Partition Magic's PQBoot utility to switch between the active boot partitions - usually a simple process requiring a reboot. PQBoot apparently looks for the bootable OS partitions on Drive 1.

Any ideas on how I might resolve this issue are very welcome.

I could temporarily unplug the SATA HD to get it out of the picture but this seems like a clumsy way to fix the problem.

Many thanks!

583829 2007-08-22 11:34:00 Well SATA's dont have slaves just masters.

Whatever the boot hdd is just go to the boot menu and change the bootdisk to hdd 2, save the BIOS settings, and it'll boot.

The mind boggles

583831 2007-08-22 21:11:00 Thanks Speedy Gonzales - ok got that about SATA "slaves" :) I'm still learning my SATA ABCs.

Well, "normally" BIOS (and apparently some partition software) look for the bootable OS on Disk 1. Since the SATA HD has designated itself as Disk 1 and has no bootable OS on it, there are problems.

So far I've tried activating the boot "select your OS" via System/advanced, but still no luck.

I would have thought the SATA drive would install itself as Disk 3 but I haven't been able to think my way past this point.

Soon as I unplugged the SATA drive, everything's fine.

583832 2007-08-22 21:18:00 I get the same thing here sometimes. If I change the boot disk in the BIOS to the flash disk if I want to boot from it, then pull it out. It'll default to the hdd thats got nothing on it.

All I have to do is change it to the SATA, and its working again.

You have to go to the BOOT menu not where it shows the hdds in the system.

And change it to the hdd (It may show the model #), then select it, then save the settings. THEN it SHOULD boot from it.

It's because you've put another hdd in, its changed the boot up order.

You can boot from any hdd you like (from the BIOS), if more than one hdd has an OS on it). BUT, you have to select the hdd to boot from FIRST. (In the BIOS). Thats if you dont have some kind of boot loader.

583833 2007-08-22 23:17:00 Speedy G:

After a lot of fluffing around, the SATA HD defaults to Disk 1 no matter what .

PartitionMagic's boot loader, PQBoot, which worked fine for choosing which OS to boot, now simply says "No operating system on Disk 1" .

A way around it is to open PartitionMagic and set the active partition manually, after which the system reboots and voila!

PQBoot must be written to ONLY check for active partitions on Disk 1 . :badpc:

Many thanks for hanging in there with me .

583834 2007-08-22 23:49:00 Well kill PQboot then .

How many hdds are actually bootable then? Have an OS on them?

1,2,3?

If 1, then kill PQboot .

hdd 2 may have 2 active partitions but are they actually bootable??

It looks like its just a strogae place for audio and video files .

It doesnt look like it .

And fix the partition so both can be seen .

That'll be the other problem .
