583681 2007-08-22 07:22:00 Guys...need help!

Gone through F1 on OE but no luck.

I've created an Orcon email addy, and used ADD to include this in OE.

I've added the POP3 and SMTP of:

POP3 mail.orcon.net.nz
SMTP mail.orcon.net.nz

as per the Orcon site instructions. (Is it correct they are the same)??

I've alternated making the xtra addy and Orcon addy the "default"...whatever that does.

I've checked the spelling a hundred times.

But I can't send Orcon emails, can only receive them.

Xtra emails come in and go out fine.

Help anyone? This is driving me nuts! :badpc:

TIA

583682 2007-08-22 07:29:00 You have to still use Xtra's SMTP server settings to send the emails out, as Orcon will not let a person from a different ISP send mail out via their servers.

eg:
POP3 mail.orcon.net.nz
SMTP smtp.xtra.co.nz

I hate to correct a Moderator here  , but YOU Can send mail via Orcon smtp server :)

All allblack has to do is:

In Outlook Express:

1. Click "Tools," and select "Accounts."

2. Click the "Mail" tab, and choose "Properties."

3. On the "Servers" tab, ensure that you have not checked "Log on Using Secure Password Authentication" in the Incoming Mail Server section or "My Server Requires Authentication" in the Outgoing Mail Server area.

4. Check that "POP3" is listed in the Incoming Mail Server field.

5. On the "Advanced" tab, ensure that you have not selected "This Server Requires a Secure Connection (SSL)" under the Incoming (POP3) or Outgoing (SMTP) Port settings.

And then allblack should be able to send mail with no problems

583685 2007-08-22 07:53:00 Thanks Stu...

Just checked and those 4 boxes are all UNticked.

I've changed outgoing SMTP as per Jen's instructions, but when I send an email it still says "sending mail via mail.orcon etc etc etc"

But hey, it seems to work, so I'm not too worried.

However, I just tried this:
Deleted my Ihug SMTP server setting in Thunderbird, and added Orcon's SMTP server as per all your mentioned settings. I then tried to send an email out but received a SMTP server error with it responding with an invalid HELO/EHLO of ...

I did this with both my @orcon email addy as the sender and the @ihug addy.

Security wise, I would have thought Orcon would only let their customers use the SMTP server otherwise anyone could pump out spam by abusing this.

583688 2007-08-22 08:49:00 Money goes to Jen . No ISP these days allows for an 'open relay' situation for spam prevention reasons .

But, Allblack, it is a common mistake so don't feel bad . I think I now remember to change the smtp address if testing a 'foreign' machine on my network!

Unless you're Xtra trying to fix a total stuff-up on an "upgrade" . . . :D
