584078 2007-08-23 10:46:00 I'm thinking of getting a Sapphire X1950 Pro 512MB graphics card as an interim upgrade for my nearly 3 yr old computer. The main reason is to keep it going as a second computer when I build a new system sometime in the next 12 months. But I'm not sure if the new card would connect to the existing PSU I have. I can't recall the exact model number of the case + PSU, but it's an Excel brand, with a 370W PSU. It has standard four-wire molex connectors. Will these connectors work with the X1950 Pro's power connections - I've heard they use six-wire connectors. Maybe the card comes with an adaptor - does anybody know?

Cheers

584079 2007-08-23 11:23:00 You can get adapters that will convert 2 4pin molex connectors up to a 6pin PCIe connector but your power supply may not be powerful enough. 370w would definitely be on the limits of what can power a X1950 especially since its only a Excel. The card normally comes with one of these adapters. Pete O'Neil (6584)
584080 2007-08-23 11:31:00 Thats still running the original Excel PSU?

If so then its one in a million, I was certain they were designed to go pop exactly 366 days after the owner took delivery of the system.

I would be upgrading it.

584082 2007-08-23 22:14:00 the saphire has molex connectors on it.get a powercolor the cooling is far superior.;) ferrite (4221)
584083 2007-08-23 23:18:00 DO NOT install a x1950 pro in the box with the current psu, you will end up taking out your entire system if you are unlucky, the card will just cause the system to restart if you are lucky.....

I purchased the Powercolour model with a TT460w PSU with 22 amps on the 12v rail, I doubt the excel even has that. Check the manufacturers web-site you will find they state 30a REQUIRED on the 12v rail and few 3 year old psu have that.

What is the rest of your system?, for peace of mind, get an nvidia 7xxx series...unless of course you can afford to get a new PSU as well..

584084 2007-08-24 06:53:00 Thanks for the replies, guys. The idea behind upgrading was to get the best AGP card (within reason) to keep this machine running for a bit longer. I could then use the 9800 pro in an older machine running with integrated graphics. If someone wants to recommend a suitable PSU, that'd be useful.

I looked at both the Sapphire and the Powercolour and couldn't really find much to separate them. In what way is the Powercolour's cooling superior?

the saphire is a good card it just has a crap fan on it,the powercolor has a much better fan,but it is also bigger takes up to slots.do a google on the saphire first thing you get in the reviews is the coolings no good.

Sorry Lizard, i should explain further, that the TT 460w wasnt good enough for the card, i ended up with the Zeus 650w, however have returned the card.

I thought the card cost me too much in the end.....

584087 2007-08-25 21:59:00 Solmeister, you mentioned that the PSU you had only had 22amps on the 12v rail, but you reckoned the card needed 30amps. I had a look at some PSUs, and even the high end ones I saw ($300+) only had 18amps. Anyone care to comment about this? Lizard (2409)
